this is the old girl i bought way back in early '92.
it was originally sunburnt, surface rusted orange.
as an apprentice panelbeater i gave it a tidy up, removing the gutters & bumpers, and had a go at painting it myself.
this is '94 ( i think ) VW day in fremantle.
i still couldn't afford wheels or an interior then.
towards the end of my apprenticeship i managed to buy some wheels, but ended up taking the wagon off the road for some more work shortly after.
it was then that i wanted a 50's kustom theme so i rounded all the door & tailgate corners, but that's about where it stopped.
so it's been sitting since '99 while i did the usual set up a business, build a house, start a family........
so now i'm about to pull the covers off it & strip it down for a makeover.
i'll add more pics as i progress.
good luck with it!
can't wait to see it
no roof gutters, that interesting. do you do that mod?
what are the plans for it this time round?
looking fowards to seeing some more, yay for the t3 wagons
whats in store, more custom? another type 3 rolls on. good luck dak dak.
the plan is to keep it as a shop truck, with a 50's salt flat theme.
picture this,
shaved door handles
filled side windows
59 caddy bullet tail lights
side opening tailgate
quad stacked headlights ( although i do have some old vw ones with indicators in them)
maybe suicide doors if i can get rego to ok it
whitewalls & moon discs
suede paint with a tinted primer look.
well that's the plan, it may well change from time to time, but i've been working on this plan for nearly 10 years now.
strip down this weekend hopefully.
Yeah! Awesome! Another Type 3 Resto!
I like the no gutters
Your plan is out there but Maaaaaaaaate
ya gota dump it:beer
that's the sort of thing I'd like to do with one
like this...

well, after spending a year & a half outside under a tarp, she finally made it into the workshop.
time to pull it apart & get all the water out first.
out with the engine & box, getting soaked in 15 year old fuel is fun, smells great too.
now it's a bit lighter & easier to push around.
i'll probably paint strip then sand all the big areas first, then send it to the blasters for all the inside edges to get done.
great stuff, is it getting a monsta motor?
not too sure at this stage.
this will be an everyday driver, but i still want something with a bit of kick. i think i have some downdraght webers upstairs somewhere........
how about an EJ22? cheaper than a stroker and should fit nicely.
actually, I did some maths not long ago, and I reckon you could squeeze a lexus v8 in to a type three, you'd need a stout gearbox, maybe an auto, but
it'd go really well and still drive smooth.

i remember a red fastback getting around perth a while back with a subi motor in it.
it's a nice thought, but being a dumbass panelbeater i'll just keep it real simple i think. i don't really want to do my head in over this wagon.
I think you might find it's easier than you think. if you can panel beat a little fab work is real easy.
There are a bunch of us on the Non-VW engine conversion list. have a look.
German look it , bigass Porsche wheels and a dumping.
empi
okey dokey, i've been busy stripping the old girl.
i've just finished spraying the etch primer & will try to get the bead blasters to hit the insides next week sometime.
wow, the old girl looks impressively solid, nice one! Pete, i like your thinking, a lexus 8!? does that include any mods for height clearance?
did you get the outside like that with stripper only?
jonno
Just put some clear coat on that!
i stripped it with 40 grit sticky discs on a slow speed buff type sander. a day and a half of work.
