VWCOOL - August 3rd, 2006 at 09:17 AM

With those old skool gold wheels it will look like a 1980s JPS BMW race car!

nicole - August 4th, 2006 at 08:56 AM

these are to be the new wheels
hopefully

nicole - September 10th, 2006 at 08:58 PM

Ok now I'm pissed off.

My baby has been with another man for 15 WEEKS now, and it should only just be ready for paint!

Sure there is alot of work involved, I understand that, but I'm paying a so called professional 15k to paint a car that he has had 4 times as long as I've owned it.

wtf?

Bizarre - September 10th, 2006 at 09:16 PM

First of all Nicole - love the wheels, but i am biased. I have them as well.

Now - that is not good with the paint job.
That is a LOT of $$$ you have paid for a paint job. Hope it included some pane work and stuff as well.

nicole - September 11th, 2006 at 12:35 AM

Yeah. It needed the drivers door realigned, 1 crack in the front welded and the bolts for the guards had pulled through, but he didn't even start on it till week 3, and it hasn't changed all that much since.

He said some shit about it being a 72 auto superbug L and it would be worth it, but I'm yet to find anywhere/one to confirm it, so for all I know he could be blowing smoke up my arse.

This sorta shit makes me wish I hadn't even started this at all. If the paint is this much hastle, what's going to happen once I start on the engine?

68AutoBug - September 11th, 2006 at 11:25 AM

Hi Nicole,
sorry to hear of Your problems...
and I believe $15K is too much money for a paint job...

for that amount of money, most professional painters would have worked day and night to have it ready..
and you would be recommending them...
I can't see You recommending Him??

I'd take it somewhere else Nicole...
You may have a fight on your hands to get Your Beetle from Him now however....

and the 1972 auto Beetle isn't really worth a lot of money

a 1975 original Auto beetle [Very Rare] was on ebay recently
and the owner told Me, He was told it was worth
$5500... at least...
It was on ebay a few times...
[reserve getting lower each time]
I'm not sure if He got $4000.... in the end..

My 68 Auto Beetle is insured for $5000 [as a classic car]
with the NRMA
and I sent them about 10 photos of the car...

sorry to say, I don't think it will be worth $15,000 if You sell it...
but then again, if you are like Me, You will never sell it..

and spray painters always take too much work on...
but Your $15k paint job should have taken priority IMHO..

Best of Luck Nicole....

Lee

mscabrio - September 11th, 2006 at 11:44 AM

I got a couple of quotes around the $15 K mark when I was looking at painting my bug (the bosy was in pretty good condition) and I was told that would be for a "pretty average job" ......

Good luck Nicole, am looking forward to seeing the progress

68AutoBug - September 11th, 2006 at 12:39 PM

Wow..

$15k for an average paint job...

no wonder so many people paint their own cars...

My Son painted Mine....
and picked the colour...

Good to have a Spray Painter in the family..

Dasdubber - September 11th, 2006 at 01:40 PM

Good luck with the remainder of the resto - hopefully it goes smoother than it has thus far. I would have thought for $15K that would include all rust repair and panel beating, not to mention a very very nice final finish. I am not sure how many quotes you got but I guess if he hasn't done much work you could pay him for what he has done to date and then find somewhere else. It would be different if it was a $5K job in which he would fit it in between other jobs when time permits....but I would have thought for that sort of money it would be a higher priority.

HOWEVER.....I am not a professional paint and panel person nor have I paid someone to paint my cars as I do it myself (yes there is a hell of a lot of time involved in a show quality finish), so this is just my 2c. Maybe Helbus on here could give some advice via U2U as he is in the trade?

nicole - September 11th, 2006 at 05:31 PM

Thank you all for the kind words.

The $$$ side of things isn't really a worry to me at all. I made a commitment to that that price (well actually the first verbal quote was "about 6k and 2 weeks"!) but it's gone to far to pull out now.

I just want my bloody car back!!!

I can't stand seeing nice shiny bugs cruising around, knowing that mine is half naked somewhere, just dying to get back out on the road.

And I can assure that if I don't get an absolutely flawless showroom finish much blood will be spilled.

HerbieBoy82 - September 11th, 2006 at 06:48 PM

Hope it all works out for you (and SOONER aswell!) I know the feeling of being stuffed about by Panel beaters. Can't wait to see the pics when you get it back.

Brendan

Volkswagenboy - September 11th, 2006 at 07:01 PM

$15k and it's not even a body off pan job? Bugger that!
I hope it all works out in the longrun.

Volkswagenboy - September 11th, 2006 at 07:03 PM

Oh and yours is a Superbug S, not L.
-Staggers.

lohoon - September 11th, 2006 at 10:33 PM

Hi,
I agree with the others, not to say anyones wrong, but a 15k paintjob should be a bare metal base, all bodywork included ,and at least to say a top final finish. Anyone who agrees to pay this much and then told it'll only be an 'average' job. Go elseware! I have been a spraypainter for a long time now and i've never heard of anyone paying that sort of dollars for anything less than a show quality, bare metal, file finished repairs, flawless finish. Inside and out! Go and have a chat and let the folks who are doing the work know you would like car done asap. After all thats a lot of bread and butter.
Good luck.

nicole - September 12th, 2006 at 07:02 AM

This was taken about 4 weeks ago.

68AutoBug - September 12th, 2006 at 11:18 AM

Hi Nicole,
I'm afraid thats not a bare metal respray from what I've seen...
the paint has been rubbed back and undercoated [which isn't bad for a $5K paintjob...]
but for 15K....

Your car should be painted in two pack premium paint of show quality ....

thanks for the pics..

Mr and Ms Vdub - January 23rd, 2007 at 06:41 PM

Hey Nicole, how are you? I live around your area chicky and if I would recommend anyone for panel work and spray painting it would have to be BodyWorks Unlimited in Leichhardt. I own a white bug with pink pearl over the top, they painted it for me, did a fantastic job AND they had it no longer then a couple of weeks if I remember correctly.

noice, you`ve gotta love a semi-auto:starhit:

Bizarre - January 9th, 2008 at 08:32 PM

Well - it certainly is shiny

Looks like a good job.
Are you still going with the Spider wheels??

kroozzn63 - January 9th, 2008 at 09:03 PM

is it slam oclock yet??

68AutoBug - January 9th, 2008 at 10:04 PM

Well it does look OK
nice and shiney... polished up great..
old headlamps want throwing away....
they spoil the look of your car....

wheels look like 14 inch...
Your car needs to be lowered or those large wheels You were talking about.... fitted..

tail lamps are illegal... all red.. maybe you already know that...

Best to join a VW club ...
as there will be plenty of helpful VW owners
who will help You save more money... {I hope]

How does Your Autostick go??
I love mine...
it really accelerates when I use the 3 gears...

Damien [killakornkob] had some gearshift stickers made a while back... I don't know if he has any left...
they go onto your ashtray...
