THUDKNUCKLE - August 25th, 2006 at 09:43 AM

Hey guys this is my pride enjoy,, i have spent the last few year building my baja bug into what it is today ( not completed yet) as the name suggestes eh lates improvment was a watercooled conversion to an injected 13B exteneded port rotary.

My site is http://groups.msn.com/GottaVW

very nice.... I like I like..... how well does it go ?

THUDKNUCKLE - August 25th, 2006 at 01:34 PM

How does it go ?? ummm the best way to sum things up is unreal. i have yet to take it on a beach run but on the road it is great, and the best thing is when other young fella's pull up beside the bug in there turbo ricer cars and feel it nesercary to malke a comment against a Vw and then try to pull away from the lights at full sting only to be left in my rear view mirror  LOL. ( Lets just say it surprises alot of People)
hehe

thanks for the reply doug

Doug Sweetman - August 25th, 2006 at 03:27 PM

I have a 62 bug with the cheeta kit, sitting in poor condition waiting for some love....... unfortunately it will be waiting for a few more years yet I think..... I also used to have a 57 (thats right, 1957, but luckily not an oval) with the bug eye kit on it.

Baja's Rule. 'Nuff said.

newoldmanx - August 25th, 2006 at 11:23 PM

mate well done thats awsome are you running aircon??? what management / exhaust/gearbox are you running????does it stay cool when your up it??

THUDKNUCKLE - August 26th, 2006 at 10:10 AM

Thanks for the feed back as for aircon no it is not currently installed but i have everything under the house to install it i just need the time, so hopefull it will be air con soon . As for engine managment i am running a stand alone Microtech lt8-xs performance computer system. This system is absolutly awasome due to the fact that by using the handset inside of the car i can completely tune or adjust any settings to the way the engine is running ( from idle rate to air and fuel mixture, and so forth) , and also allows me to change between 3 differant engine map settings at the touch of a button.

The exhaust i used is shown on my web page along with its construction but it is a 2.5 inch system including the extractors. The exhaust was custom made to fit as were the extractors. I custom made the extractors rather then using stock after market ones do to the fact that i could lengthing them ( increase in HP the longer the extractors are) and so i could make them out of heavier gage steel, this was becouse rotaries are well known for burning through stock extractors thin walls. The extractors where wrapped in an industrial exhuast lagging to help keep the heat out of the engine bay and the back of the car.

THE COOLING really works beutifuly no matter how the car is driven the engine temperature never reaches above 92 ( operating temp for engine is stated at 90 - 95) I have been stuck on the highway at crawling speed for 4 hours after two trucks hit head on and have also driven the car at high rpm for an extended period of time to test the coolign system and it has performed flawlessly. However it does take longer for the engine to reach operating temperature due to the long coolign pipes and the extra volume of water. Pictures below show the extractors, exhuasts , and computer system.

Front view of the extractors installed note the axle on the previious picture. and also a picture of the completed exhaust system in the care and trial fittign the rear cage ( new rear cage coming soon) you can see the 2 resignator style mufflers ( stainless steel packed to deal with the rotary pulse) and there placement inside the engine bay

Also the Cat i used

fenrayer - August 26th, 2006 at 04:12 PM

THUDKNUCKLE - March 6th, 2009 at 02:29 PM

the Rotor baja is now sold to a fella up north in mackey , , it will be greatly missed

Zako - March 10th, 2009 at 09:10 AM

Do you have the 5 & 6 ports on the 13b wired open permanently or are they still vacuum operated? Have you felt the ports kick in when you're going above bout 3000rpm?

How hard was it to get the engine in? I had this engine in my 77 808 wagon and am thinking about doing a rota conversion to my 71 superbeetle.

Kind Regards

Zako

skelaaleks - March 27th, 2009 at 07:05 AM

hey guys ,, yeah i miss it sooo bad its rediculous ,, i would do almost anything to have it back in my possesion ,,, as a matter of fact i miss the whole vw scene ,,, skelaaleks i do have heaps of detailed pics of the cooling system ill have a look for them and send them on to you ,, 20b kombi,, what car is better ,,,,,,NONE ,, scince this car i have owned alot of riceburners ( buying and selling through the buisness, including tommi evo , evo 6 , series 7 rx7 , rz supras , 33 gtst and 32 gtst skyline , and currently a honda s2000 ( which i will admitt comes close to the vw as far as fun factor goes but deff not there ).. but dont worry once this last car sells ( s2k ) i will look at downgrading and starting another choptop baja ,, watercooled of corse ,,, ahhhh excitiment .. cant wait .

polak - July 3rd, 2009 at 05:51 PM

hey, just curious were did u find the conversion plate? was it an of the shelf item or did u get it custom made? what gearbox did u run? any problems? been flirting with the idea of a rotor in a bug, but completely ridiculous and strictly for drag racing, so any insight into what problems i could expect would be helpful
cheers adam
