here are a few bits and pieces....conti 145's I scored from Hertz (thanks mate), the first bit'o'bling (rear window shade), painted the pan w/rust kill - good stuff, although you wouldn't want to drink a pint of it.....some lovely roof rust which won't be going anywhere! might get some of that waxoyl stuff for it, and the rims I'll be using, which are from CaffinePusherMan's deceased beetle, betty-lou......they are powder coated cherry red, and will have the 1.75" cracker's installed. The bug rims are 1.6cm closer to the guard lip (offset-wise) but with 145's front and back they shouldn't rub.

1. cleaned up the door cards....shinin'
2. here you can see the new door seals (although it's a small pic). These are from The DDB in Oregon, USA. They are a seal/door pinch all in one, and attach to the car, not the door. Heard some good reviews from buyers on the samba, and they seem to be the goods.
3.got this replacement door from PaulR, little did I know of the 2 tab vs. 3 tab dilemma. Now I have to torch the hinges and hope I can wack the pins out, to do a switch. Take ages to re-install the crusty old rubbers etc..
Only $165 landed too!
4. 65' bitch.
5. Sold to 'rene'

1. got the glovebox lid back from ross's house in the 'rak. Good to see him throwing a 'dub amongst the pigeons' (or amongst the cayenne's anyway). the lid will come in handy when I need to get some lotus white acrylic colour matched. easier than taking in the roof.

Wow someone has been a busy boy, when is it cruisin over for a lowering?

ren - October 1st, 2006 at 10:14 PM

1. I'll use Bibendum instead of the usual mobil pegasus, bottom corner of each front guard. Courtesy of CaffinePusherMan's 'pipe pusher' brother. Nice guy!

2, ,4 , 5 - Used some rustkill stuff on the under side of the front guards, it's black, and should help prolong the life of these things for a while yet.

3 - started the strip disc to metal/rough up, wax/grease remover, bog, etch, red oxide routine on the rear quarters. Need them done this week for sure. Looks really patchy, because the rattle can etch is so damn thin. haven't finished bogging that part anyway, so will need to take that etch back again. No garage, no love.

6. 2 tab hinges. Who needs them? got this replacement door from paulr (great guy), and after spending ages changing all the crusty-ass rubbers over, realised it's a 67-69 door w/old style handle/lock, but new style hinges. Now I need to get the pins out and convert it to 3 tab. Fun.

Got a good start on the stereo install. This is a pancake sub box to match the pancake engine. It fits nicely in the rear luggage area, and will later be tarted up with some travel-dest stickers, leather straps/handle, and leather corners, just like a suitcase. Will have to paint it (maybe red ox) or cover it with something. I'm using my trusty 1gb shuffle, w/4 channel amp and cervin vega 5" splits.

Roofrack I picked up at bacchus marsh for $150! lucky I was there early. Owner said it was for square, so I bought it with a glimmer of hope that it would fit the notch, and luckily I was right! As you can see in my signature/selecta rendition, I had banished the roofrack idea to the 'after I get back from Japan bin' with the narrowed bug beam swap/airbags. Bang Bang! Sweet rack. Don't know it's origin though.....the whole thing comes apart with fasteners, which I updated for chromed items (even a rat has to shower once in a while), the only thing I don't like is the suction caps, but hey it's better than a kick in the booty.

On the way home I dropped into bunnings for some 40x8x1100mm lengthes of tassy oak, and some bolts/washers/nulocs, and a can of decking oil (october brown is the colour, since I don't really like the pale wood Flat4 use). It's still lightish, but not yellow. There will be 10 slats, and they are as wide as Flat4, but a little thicker (2mm). and will bolt on at each end pipe, and the middle bar too. Hopefully I'll do this tomorrow and post pics.

some more stuff to go on the poor boy. hella reverse light, which is nice and big, and a sunvisor. Since the solid one isn't for type 3, and probably not any dub for that matter, I'll go with the good ol' aussie mesh unit. Hopefully these brackets (which I scored at bacchus) will do the trick! Very happy to find them. Got some 996 Carrera floormats for the front of the notch, even though I'm installing a new charcoal carpet kit (don't like the plastic insert in the front carpet-looks cheap n' 80's, but bad 80's, you know?) so maybe they'll work ok. Can't believe I got sucked into the porsche-vw sisterhood. Isn't that just for dubbers trying to justify their love, madonna style? And these didn't even come from an air cooled 911 either. Oh well, they are expensive looking and plush, so bare feet driving could be on the cards.
Also scuffed the shit out of a hubcap, en route a mission to mimic the old utility/barndoor/kdf style grey painted caps from back in the day. I keyed them with 40 grit good 'n proper, then etched them (twice) then grey primer (twice) which I'll gently rub back and clear coat. Might be shit, might be great. I think it will look nice with the red rims/white walls anyway. Got the idea from the fire-barny that flat4 were selling recently, which by the way was a bargain at around 31 grand.
#hubcap looks a bit shemp, since it has a wd40 spattered on it!

Looking good REN,

Another type 3 for the roads, Great

ren - October 2nd, 2006 at 07:05 PM

ok got the rack done today. stained the slats w/decking oil stain.
1,2 after and before staining....
3. B-Dizl being a junkyard dog
4. bolts, washers and nulocs for the slats.
5. the maths
6. drilled out the holes, after breaking 2-3 crap drill bits.
7. drilled one end of the slats, but left the other end so they match up nicely.
8. bolt in one end of all the slats.
9. tip the rack upside down and drill through the metal holes so the slat holes match up right.

They look like my safety boots! I was thinking of returning them and complaining to the manufacturer but I was assured they met the required Australian Design Rules so I let it slide. Just thought I'd let you know in case you were thinking the same.

Thanks Das. There is actually a small but determined group of us over at the http://www.thongsforwork.com  forums, and we'd love to have you on board. Rather than complaining to the manufacturer as you have, we generally complain to one another, so I'm sure your pro-active thinking would really inspire our members.
