My 54 Beetle's Steroid 36hp.....now running!
Craig Torrens - September 25th, 2006 at 07:40 PM

So its finally on the road, my 36hp steroid motor is ALIVE !!! The motor was built by in 2002 but I have not been able to drive the car until now. I'm amazed at how well a modified 36hp motor drives....... a lot more grunt than standard :thumb

Here it is:

Euro_67 - September 25th, 2006 at 07:46 PM

Vintage HP.......cool.

Craig Torrens - September 25th, 2006 at 07:48 PM

I had the original exhaust ceramic coated as well as fitting a modified mini sump !!:P

Anthiron - September 25th, 2006 at 07:53 PM

so whats done to the engine craig?

ive read that hotted up 36ers dont last too long.

Craig Torrens - September 25th, 2006 at 08:10 PM

I tried to have it modified to what would have been done in the 50's

Heads= Bigger ports with larger valves, standard rockers
Compression= Raised !
Crank= Eight dowelled and fully balanced
Conrods=Standard, Balanced
Cam= Tighe Cam 37/68 grind , bolted with modified lifters/pushrods
Oil pump= 30mm H/duty and anti surge sump.
Carbs=Twin 28pci with custom linkages.
Electrics=009 dizzy (Does NOT have a flat spot !)
Exhaust=Modified and ceramic coated

All new bearings, rings, gaskets/seals and new clutch.

As for lasting...............well as long as I keep the revs below 5000rpm it should be fine !

Anthiron - September 25th, 2006 at 08:17 PM

what sort of BHP do u think that gives you?

Craig Torrens - September 25th, 2006 at 08:24 PM

Probably 38hp !!!!!!!!!!!:P

It feels more potent than my 1968 single port 1500, so probably around 45-50hp.

haha

It's cool that you've done it though... so you didnt get the crank balanced at the same time then - only reving to 5k?

Craig Paton - September 25th, 2006 at 09:07 PM

:yes: Kool...!

You'll ave a busy '07 by the look of your signature!:smilegrin:

Craig Torrens - September 25th, 2006 at 09:18 PM

The crank is balanced just not counterweighted. The quality of the steel in 36hp cranks is not as good as the later, so they tend to crack quicker if you give them heaps.:cry

squizy - September 25th, 2006 at 11:00 PM

Craigie!!!!!

I reckon I might get 40hp then eh mate?

vw54 - September 26th, 2006 at 07:33 AM

Craig Torrens - September 26th, 2006 at 07:46 AM
