kafer70 - May 11th, 2003 at 04:57 PM

Personally I love all things vw and your safari looks great but to me the rat look seems to be when you can't afford any other look. I know i'm gunna be proved wrong but please don't take offense to this remark any rat lookers or lovers of. I've seen some nice ones.:D

baybuscamperkid - May 11th, 2003 at 05:23 PM

i gotta agree with kafar on this one, the only way to do it justice would be a clean semi custom/resto

helbus - May 11th, 2003 at 05:41 PM

You could always ratlook it now and change your mid later!

empi - May 11th, 2003 at 06:48 PM

LOVE IT
GO THE RAT !
Tint the windows, drop it a bit, maybe a side step and thats all....well maybe a speed stripe in flat red...... !
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET !

BenettonVW - May 11th, 2003 at 08:32 PM

Madness! Nice wheels.. They look better on your bus than they would've on the Beetle.

With the Rat look, I think that that is the idea of doing it like that. The idea is then to spend the money on the motor, rather than restoring the outer or the 'looks'.
Usually the money has nothing to do with the equation, it is more a personal taste or preference thing..

DUMP IT, RAT IT

type2truck - May 11th, 2003 at 09:26 PM

GO THE RAT-LOOK!
There's plenty of "pretty" splits around these days with plenty more in progress, I cann't wait to find a suitable single cab to do the rat-look on!!!!

HotRodMatt - May 11th, 2003 at 09:31 PM

The rat is best...

Keep it lasting rat by using a matte clear coat over the old paint....

whatnow - May 12th, 2003 at 12:44 PM

that is the perfect base for a rat looker.
another vote for RAT !

countrybuggykid - May 12th, 2003 at 12:57 PM

How much doe's it cost for a set of wheel's like that ?,Nice:thumb
And what are they called so I can keep an eye out for a set.
CBK

GO RAT

Unity-28 - May 12th, 2003 at 01:33 PM

South African Sprintstars!?
Rat it now, resto later! The car is too solid to keep it ratted!

N!

KruizinKombi - May 12th, 2003 at 03:03 PM

I agree, rat now, resto later.

Herbie - May 12th, 2003 at 07:39 PM

I guess the rat look is the unrestored but still fighting fit lowered look.
I have seen a wide range of buses refered to as "the Rat Look"
And now its a bit confusing,
what do you define as the rat look?
Cheers tony

jenz58 - May 12th, 2003 at 11:26 PM

Rat look:bounce:bounce:bounce

We need a decent rat at our shows and I love the look:cool:

Hey the ones I've seen in mags don't look like too much skimping has gone on. The body still needs to be protected from rust and rust taken out etc

Sweet go for it:thumb

helbus - May 12th, 2003 at 11:52 PM

I think the beauty of the rat look is the history that is told just by the body itself.
It cannot be copied, and makes your vehicle really unique.
If you get sick of it go the resto. In fact use it to pick up resto bits!

1972super - May 14th, 2003 at 04:22 PM

While on the topic of “the rat look”, today in the Victoria University car park I spotted a 1962 Beetle that looked in poor condition. As I'm new to Volkswagens I didn't even knew that people would like to drive a "Rat look" VW's.

I'm not sure If this car has been done up have the "rat look" or if it's just in very bad shape? It has dented bumper bars and what appears to be surface around the back.

The car's rego is MI-350 (Vic) and I've seen shots of it at various Beetle events.

pyr0 - May 14th, 2003 at 04:51 PM

love the bus, just on the note of the " rat look" we should make a deffinition post up that diffines the rat look the cal look and the various other looks out there

OvalGlen - May 14th, 2003 at 05:59 PM

Definateley the Rat look on the Kombi.
The Beetle is a different story.
If it has been done up Mechanically then great, or if the person just Loves driving around their unrestored Beetle then fine
But if they just (and only just) keep it on the road because its their Bomb that they dont care about at all - then thats a bit sad...............but better on the road than crushed..!!!

alldak - May 15th, 2003 at 07:46 PM

get some old style looking sign writing on it in german, try to keep it looking as ratty as the car SLAM IT IN THE WEEDS upgrade the brakes put a huge motor in it ,then smoke em up , i think rat is the way for this bus :thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:P

mattie - May 15th, 2003 at 08:08 PM

volma1 - May 17th, 2003 at 02:00 AM

Looks great Anth with the proper tail lights and those sprintstars. Lends itself to the ratlook mate.volma1

BUGBOY - May 19th, 2003 at 10:05 PM

I love the look of the body in the original paint as it lets the car tell it life story.
Once you paint it you then have to rechrome , new rubbers lenses etc etc , because it only looks half done.
Then you spend that much you carn`t just park it anywhere. If the car is still all one colour and has no rust holes etc then its cool.
I think people respect that to and still admire the car for its age.
So thats my 2 cents worth:thumb

Darthbug - May 26th, 2003 at 06:52 PM

Hi 1972super,

The beetle in the car park is mine.
No, I did not go for the "rat look" just a cheap daily driver. It was in better condition until a taxie ran into the back of it a year ago.
The floor pan and the mechanicals are in excellent condition but the body has a lot of rust, will end up using it as a donner for the 61 rag top.

1972super - May 29th, 2003 at 03:12 PM

Thanks Darthbug for your reply, do you lecture at Vic uni? I've seen a few Vw's in that car park.

As a new comer to Vw's, after I heard their was a category called the "rat look" I thought about your car, I wasn't sure I it looked like that on purpose. As I said I'm still learning so I hope I didn't offend you.

Pity about the taxi running into the back of you, hope to see your 61 rag top in car park soon.

1972super.
