56 oval rag
BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:27 PM

After selling my 56 oval I thought i'd remove all the details I had about it from this topic.
I now will just post info about the project I'd been working on.
Its another 56 oval

Have a few beers and get out the angle grinder.
I find this settles the nerves.

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:33 PM

check and recheck.
you only get one chance at stuff like this.

HotRodMatt - August 8th, 2005 at 08:35 PM

Good to see a face shield in use!

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:37 PM

Time to spot it all in.
the fit turned out spot on.
As always ,lot of pratice:thumb

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:40 PM

Time to run the dolly around and get it all in shape for welding.

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:46 PM

Used a mild steel wire with a high silicon content.
Found this wire flowed really well.
Also welding with a tig.
Mig welding a roof clip gives you a hard beed of weld that is hard to work with later.

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:50 PM

Clip is all welded in and ready for a bit of work with the flipper.
This will get the roof back into shape that the heat has produced.
Next is the front spare wheel well as it needs a bit of work.

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 08:53 PM

This car is only going to be a custom.
After the the front is all fixed up i`ll be working on the rear clip to make sure the motor will fit.
I`ll try to keep an update on here.

pete wood - August 8th, 2005 at 09:05 PM

looking good. What is it with all the rag top conversions of late? you guys all make it look easy. :duh

BTW, how custom...can't see a chop job yet

BUGBOY - August 8th, 2005 at 09:17 PM

No need to do a chop top with an oval.
but lets just say with the mods on this oval it will run a few PSI.
I want to keep the body as stock as possible.
But it will run disc brakes and a better engine than stock.:thumbnn[ Edited on 8-8-2005 by BUGBOY ]

Don`t forget your welcome to come over and watch it work any time mate!

BenettonVW - August 14th, 2005 at 08:15 PM

Nice one mate, excellent.

I better come down and check out this work.... oh and the fridge... ;)

BUGBOY - September 14th, 2005 at 09:45 PM

Well this projects come to a stop and the only thing thats getting a good work out is the fridge.
Might have to pull the plug!
Pulled the old shitty mirrors off the TINKDF and put on some others.
As for the rag project i`ll start on that again next week.

Stealth - September 14th, 2005 at 10:19 PM

BUGBOY - September 14th, 2005 at 10:24 PM

MR Bubble head comes over to help a lot!
Still never get anything done?
He was just saying the other night he never drank as much till he moved into the hood.:P

BUGBOY - December 18th, 2005 at 09:16 AM

Well I have only done a little work on this car since the last post on here.
Been working on a late model type 3 sqaure back for the wife.
Also I now have a 7 week old daughter called Eve.
This has taken up so much time.

The rag roof has had about 18 hours spent on it with hammer and dollies and has been filed back to near full metal finish.
It has also been lead wiped to fix any areas that just wouldn`t come to the party.
I`ll post pictures up early next week.

Mr Bubble Head - December 18th, 2005 at 10:58 AM

...carn't beat a hole in ya roof I put one in to match the one in my head. Now the race is on who's oval rag is going to roll first if I put a padlock on the fridge maybe could be a close race.

Deano get a hole dude !! its saves bending over leaning out of the window to see uranus.

Grey 57 - December 18th, 2005 at 08:03 PM

cant cut a hole in a nice T34 like mine. If i want to see Uranus I will go out in "her in doors" new toy. check it!! Not vw tho. But not too bad either.

Mr Bubble Head - December 19th, 2005 at 05:28 PM

Shes got to be lovin that !!! You carn't beat the feeling of a cabs with the hood down 306's are great cars :thumb:thumb

BUGBOY - December 20th, 2005 at 10:34 AM

Here is the roof all filed back.
Never thought it would be so hard to find the flux to do this job, also files that don`t clog up.
Had to find files which where like what you would use on wood.

As you can see it does give a nice finish which will last for ever.
The big plus with using this method is that the roof of a car can get very hot in summer and advantage of this stuff is it will move with the body eg. expands and contracts with the heat with out cracking.
Don`t get me wrong as filler would work just as well if done right as it has come a long way over the years but I like the old school methods.
Next is to clean it all down and get it in primer.

Might even make some sinkers with the left overs:thumb

VWFOOL - December 20th, 2005 at 10:57 AM

nice work, so envious :)

Grey 57 - December 20th, 2005 at 04:26 PM

Nice work Nath, lead loading is real old skooll these days but it comes up a treat. :thumb:thumb
