I got some 2nd 17x7 et50 (205 45 pirelli) and 17x8.5 et55 (225 ?mitchelin) Porsche wheels with 2nd tyres and center caps a for grand, some minor
scratches.
I swaped my 911 Porsche cooling kit for a New 78mm Type 4 A A Products stroker crank.
Dubs by the pubs was a mad weekend. I picked up a EMPI breather tank, after chatting with Dak a Tak decided the fittings were rubbish and picked up
some Speed Flow gear.
And finally 944 Turbo front struts
Kit is from a Porsche place in the States, cost me $1160 landed at my door. Includes: Koni adjustable strut inserts, threaded sleeves, aluminum top
perch, 2.5 I.D. 175 pound springs 7 inch long, 2.5 I.D. helper springs, adjutable spring seats, bumpstops, suction stop washes, C spanner, new bolts,
rubber seals and instructions.
The top bolt is the same size as the 1303 strut top / bearing plate. I have adjustable tops coming.
I hope it all works out!
Looking good Rob , now to just get it all together for the Valla sprints / laps
Oh and tell ya old man to pull his finger out and we want to see his buggy at Valla too
I'm just waiting for some parts for the rear and then it should be done.
I'll have to help Dad and that'll hopefully get him kick started!
While your waiting for parts you can get started again on the Humpy Panel Van
what are the length of those inserts and are those struts, lowered stock struts (they look like it)? I bought a set of adjustable struts took them to koni to work out the type of insert i needed, and haven't heard back from them and that was over a month ago. i just need an insert, and they cant work it out!!!
Generally speaking (well - V Force / VVDS struts) use a Golf insert
No these are not golf inserts they are 944 turbo, do you have the 944 turbo M030 adjustables (or what ever they call them) I'll have to measure them
for you.
The golf ones screw onto a thread which is welded onto the top, these 944 ones you have to drill a hole into the bottom of the leg and then bolt it in
from the bottom. Oh I for got to mention first you need to cut the strut at the 325mm mark and remove the guts of it, Ill try to post a link
http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?article=38
Its by paragon-products
I'll post more as I go.
i did advise them that a golf insert is used. but a modified golf insert is used i think. I might contact vforce see what they say.
I installed an MSD 6AL on the weekend, if any one had told me it would improve the car as much as it did I would never have believed them. I reakon
performance is double. All I did was re-gap the spark plugs to 40thou and re set the timing to 30 degrees all in.
It runs so much better, idles, flat spot gone, revs better. I'm getting a Blaster 2 coil this week not expecting any better performance, but the
quality of my ratty looking GT40 is questionable.
I've been having major issues with the gear shifter, I currently had a T3 shifter with quick shift kit and the whole set up was horrible, was not a H
pattern at all it was more like an inverted 4 or something. Getting gears in it was a skill. My mate had a go and when he tried to get in third the
lever popped right out of the socket and spun around 180 and sat backwards with the bend going to the front of the car.
Dak-A-Tak told me that if I replaced the shifter at least with the EMPI it ahould sort out the issue. The same mate that couldnt find 3rd had an EMPI
short shifter (Hurst Style). So I fitted it. Dak couldnt have been closer to the truth. It shifts so postively, find every gear, H pattern. I love
the fact the stick sits between 3rd and 4th like a normal gear box. Oh and now revese is actually locked out!
These two small mods have restored my love for my car......
what are your engine specs?
T1 VW universal case
92mm barrel and pistons, so 1835cc (very 2nd Hand)
New rings
Compression is about 8:1
Stock twin port heads resurfaced (for good seal)
New german seal kit.
13 pound fly wheel (balanced with clutch)
single DCNF40, 30mm vents (cant remember the jet sizes)
EMPI semi extrators
CB swivel feet (thanks Damo)
Chromoly Gland nut
Chromoly push rods
009 dizzy
new 9mm leads
new cap
new rotor
GT40
MSD 6AL (7500 rev limiter(thats what it came with))
engine is a junka I got with another car of a mate. I semi rebuilt the engine myself.
I have a second hand 1 5/8" merged exhaust to go on, and a pair of 40IDF's which I think are no good because there off an alfa or something and dont
have idle screws on both ends........
Whats to long to wait for parts? I've been waiting now for 17 months for parts that I've paid for. I now know that I'm being lied to, after a
comment he made today.
Do I just ring NSW Office of fair trade? Send someone there?
Or just bad mouth them on here? The list is long with the rubbish I've had to deal with. And the trouble is he still owes me a considerable number
of expensive parts.
have you mentioned to him about how pissed off you are? give him a dead line to supply the parts or refund the money? but what ever you do, dont bad mouth them on here as it will only end badly trust me on this ive seen it many times
very sad situation. i feel for you
ask for a refund and tell them (without being hostile about it) you feel like you now need third party assistance and will be looking into fair
trading if you don't get your money back, then maybe contact fairtrading to tell them the situation so they can act quickly with up to date info if
you need them...........
there isn't anything you cant get within a week from anywhere on the globe.
take your money elsewhere
Spoke to him and let him know how I felt I guess I'll know by the end of the week if he has taken me seriously.
Well now for some good news......
As some of you might have read in another post I've been suffering from axle tramp/clutch shudder. I bit the bullet and decided to replace the
torsion tube rubbers, unfortunately at the time I could only get my hands on poly outers and rubber inners but I'll fix that up later.
Here are some pics of how bad they were:
In both pics you can see that the tube is no longer sitting in the rubber by about 4mm on the left side and 3mm on the right side.
There is actually a lip that is warn into the spring plate.
Due to bad welding on the sring plates you can see where the rubbers have been chewed out, I have grinded the lumps off so that they are now
smooth.
Well I was doing that I took the oppertunity to lower the car in the rear. Lowest point which was the berg style mid mount was 180mm, by moving up
one outside spline after driving the car to let it settle in it lowered the car 55mm. I'm happy with the new look the camber on the wheels is
awesome, I think I differently need to replace the pivot arm bushes, much bigger job for another week end.
Some people would be jealous of my rat mold, my wife is embarrised. She hates my car, but calmer got her when her 02 Astra SRI alternator died and
she had to drive my "mold coloured" car to work for a week!
Clutch/Tramp issues still not fixed, I might try a new clutch that hasnt seen oil.
Due to a fellow Ebayer with his amature listing I picked up a set of WRX seats for $200. The base is 540mm wide and the shoulders are 530mm wide.
The rails look very good for modifing to fit the car.
Hopefully I might have a chance to take the car to Bad Little Buggers on the Gold Coast tomorrow, but we'll see.
Nearly missed the kombi fest today, half way there down the high way and I realised my oil pressure gauge wasnt working, cause the light wasnt on.
Pulled over to check nothing was a miss then I saw the oil switch wasnt connected so I connected it (the car is still running) went back to the dash
and Oh no the lights on, My mate yells from the back of the car "Oils spewing out every were!" I turn it off to find this.
and then I look under the guard to see the oil filter has blown its seal and then at closer inspection the filter has expanded like a frozen coke
can
Thanks to the folks in the red cab, blue L? and the new bug for pulling over. My wife came out with a new Z9, bottle of oil, multigrips, a rag and a
funnel. 10 minutes of bush machinics and I was back on the road to the show. I think my wife was quite smug in her astra but disappointed when it
was back on the road faster than it took her to get there.
After a chat with a couple of people it was undecided what went wrong. Brendon thought it might be the pressure relief valve but I was a long way
from home, so It couldnt have been that. When I got home later that afternoon.......
Hansel and Grettle.
I drove the car for 20min including filling the car up before I noticed.
All seems fine for the moment, it was still leaking oil when I pulled over so there must have still been some left.......
need a breather box....
nick
I've got one, I'm just waiting to get an aluminum filler neck so I can weld on all my Speed Flow fittings.
Was that a question or statement Nick? How would it help?
case/pressure release/ventilation?
very short statements mate sorry.
love your work.
nick
alot of ppl have that same problem with full flow cos its prior to the oil pressure releife valve it sees full pressure from the pump
only other suggestion i can make is ditch the valvoline filter
ive heard ppl bitching that they dont have a bypass valve... not sure on that tho
i was running them to but swapped to a purolator one
what grade oil are u using?
i had pretty high oil pressure in mine running 20/50 i was always worried about blowing the hoses cos i only have barbed fittings with hose clamps atm
so i swapped down to 10/30
much better now
Yeah I'm running 20/50. It normally runs at 22psi on idle and about 40psi on the high way. The filter that blew was a 210 or something which was
what was on the filter mount when I got it, I later checked and the Z9 fits, I'm pretty sure the Z9 has a bypass. Next time I'm going to get a
Fram.
When I started the car to drive home from the show, for the first time ever it was idling at 40psi?
DUB74L I was disappointed I wanted to see your supercharger. You've been tempting me! Then you let me down.
IMO you need thinner oil, 10/30 and use only german Mann or Knecht oil filter from a vw supplier [same as TIV kombi filter]
LOL yea trust me that was a painfull trip with a standard 1600
i was slipstreaming semis on the way home cos the cross winds were killing me
altho i cant complain about the fuel consumption tho
whole trip was 293km and did it with 19.8L
vw oil takes forever to heat up cos theres no real thermostat on the oil cooler, just the oil cooler bypass which only diverts a portion of it
so ur idle pressure may be up around 40psi for a while
till things heat up
22 at full temp may be abit high tho i would definately swap to 10/30
Also engines warm up properly with the thermostat fitted and operating.
yeah problem is the flaps only close off air to the heads/jugs not the oil cooler and actually when closed when cold just forces even more air thro
the oil cooler
dont see to many vws with flaps assemblies let alone a working stat
I aint got no flaps.
I did get this yesterday for $70
And here are my 944 Turbo Legs back from my Painter mate, freshly cut up and painted. Mmmmmm.
You put the O ring on first before the thread
Put the rubber boot on and fold down to insert the Shock, tighten the bolt on the bottom of the shock to 55 lbs.
The white plastic bit is to stop the bump stop sucking onto the shock.
Mmmmm Adjustable tops.
Put your springs on then the hat and then Caster top.
And thats it fully adjustable strut leg, with out any welding. Ready for My Big 944 Turbo brakes and wheels.
Those struts have come up great
Strutin your stuff Rob nice, now wash the car please.
Ha Ha, I've still refused to was the car, I'll have to wash it with sand paper when the time finally comes.
I'm still thinking about putting that sticker on Damo!
They fitted well, first go actually. I might change the angle of the base yet, I'll have to drive around for a while first.
Door to wing gap
Wing to wing gap
Base to base gap and hand brake clearance
I sit 10mm higher than the old shagged out seats, so maybe the same or lower than stock.
got any pictures of the seat mounts?
