'60 Ragtop and '58 Beetle
oldskl60 - June 9th, 2008 at 09:13 PM

Hey All
Thought I would finally put some pics of my rag. I have finally got it up to Brisbane from Adelaide - hoping to get it to the track soonish. Plenty of work to go though. As you can see, tiny garage but just enough room to tinker...
Cheers
Tom

VWCOOL - June 10th, 2008 at 12:56 AM

Nice! Too good for the track...

Dasdubber - June 10th, 2008 at 09:26 PM

Nice one Tom - another tough beetle being built in SE Qld is great for the scene up here! Tell us a little more - obviously the alloy beam and centrelines mean business!
Al :tu:

It is pretty hard not to get enthused by the scene up here! Can't wait to be able to have a run again - current aim is Warwick 2009...
It will be running an superflow'd (48 x 38mm valves) 2332cc motor, IDAs, Berg 1.52:1 rockers and bugpack cam (similar to fk89).
The motor and gear box have run 11.6 (best mph of 117)in a very light car. I am adding a heap of weight given that I want to be able to drive it on the street (may change beam) - so if I can hit some low 12s I will be happy.

Dasdubber - June 10th, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Great stuff mate - looking forward to seeing the progress!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - June 11th, 2008 at 06:48 AM

Thanks for backing me up Pete Wood - that was my thought also...

Turbo54 - yes it is the motor and gearbox out of the car once featured in hot4s as "Beetle Juice" - this car is now ( regretfully) retired.

Pete - I am sure I will have to take you up on the offer! It is very much appreciated!!

Dave - great to hear from you! Any news re your cars?

We did up a couple of clips way back if anyone is interested...

After minimal progress on the ragtop, a few months back I decided I would put my 2332 in my brown '58. It has taken a heaps longer than I had hoped but today (after approx 4yrs) I was able to fire it up. It fired first pop bringing a rather large smile to my face!! Still plenty of finishing off to do before hitting the track.

The tranny has also had some upgrades. After Pete and I noticed a 'loose' spider gear pin , we shipped it off to Dangerous who confirmed a shagged super diff. Dave went through the box and ended up fitting a spool, new syncros etc...

Looking forward to hitting the streets! Hopefully next weekend...

What is the latest Tom?!

RAZ34 - June 6th, 2010 at 06:14 PM

Hurry up Tom. Pete and Tom were walking around like Zombies after a big thrash to get the car there. I know the answer but will let Tom spill.

hellbugged - June 6th, 2010 at 06:17 PM

that's beautiful!

oldskl60 - June 6th, 2010 at 07:27 PM

Yep after a monster effort by Pete, we made it to the track for a low key familiarisation. Pete collected myself and the car Friday morning. Only stopping for about 5hrs we test drove it for the first time at 3:30pm Sat, then straight to the track at 5.30pm. I can thank Pete enough - I reckon it would have taken me a couple weeks to get it to that point.
With circa 160 cars we were lucky to manage two runs. Plenty of nerves (new car, track blah blah..) but so glad to be back in a hot vw.
The first one was a bit of a debacle but it was only ever going to be a half track romp... Launched at about 6,000, missed second gear and rolled off it at half track. All felt and good and found my way to the return road. No time was recorded due to computer error but it did not really matter.
The second pass was a little better although I missed second AGAIN... (welcome to the amateur hour). Ran through with a 13.43 at 105.5 (pretty sure that is what it was). It felt great off the line, plenty of wheel spin but still managed a 1.86 60' (i think, time slip is not with me ATM).
The car felt good, a still few things to do but hopefully it has a 12second full street trim (full int and street tyres) pass in it...
A MASSIVE thanks to Pete and Rod for all their support, advice and patience!

vassy66T1 - June 6th, 2010 at 07:55 PM

That is awesome Tom!! Bit of "mumbo" there

Good on you Pete and Rod for lending a hand..

reub - June 6th, 2010 at 07:56 PM

Nice work Tom, and great work to Pete for assisting you get there.
Look forward to reading of a 12sec pass:tu:

oldskl60 - June 7th, 2010 at 08:41 AM

Thanks guys. Cool pic Pete - thanks for finding. Looks like i will have to detail the pan (or just the bits you can see)

Dangerous, the spool took a bit to get used to on the street but loved it at the track, especially coming out of the burnout... Third gear, as you suspected is nice and loud but it will beat listening to my wife saying "slow down"...

debiasi4 - June 7th, 2010 at 01:31 PM

great to hear you got to the track again tom car looks great
