I Wana Herbie - December 30th, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Hi All,

I recently purchased a movie used herbie from Herbie goes bananas. It was the 4 wheel steering herbie that spun in circles.

It has been restored to Herbie goes to monte carlo specs.

Here are some links to the finished car and resto photos.

Nice work. How long did it take you, and how did you manage to track down the original project?

I was actually going to buy one of the herbie fully loaded movies from some one who owned a few of them after the movie ended. He changed his mind at the last minute as his wife didnt want to let it go. But he told me that he knew of some one selling an original herbie from the old movies. So he put me in touch with him and he was even kind enough to drive it 10 hours to the guy who was going to restore it for me. he owned it for about 6-7 years and never got around to restoring it. This car sat in a junkyard with 4 other original herbies for about 10 years. (If you look at the restoration album you will see a timeline of the car from movies to now)

The car took about 6 months to completly restore. I flew over in Juyly/august and worked on the car with the restorer guy for a few days and to see the car for my self. The guy that restored my herbie owns a herbie that was used in herbie goes to monte carlo and herbie goes bananas. His Herbie is insured for $50k US.

My car was rigged with 4 wheel steering. I have kept the original stunt chassis untouched and placed the body on a drivable chassis. The car was painted by disney to look rusty in its main sceene. that is why I have left the horn grill and bumpers with that fake painted rust on. Disney also cut out a fake sunroof and made a wooden frame for the sunroof and also cut large holes in the rear wheel wells so the rear wheels could have clearance to turn out 45 degrees.

The car was finished about 2 weeks ago. I might leave shipping it home until march as there is a Herbie 40th Aniversery at disneyland in florida, there is going to be a small gathering of movie cars and replicas and I may take the car there and ship it out of orlando some where. not to sure just yet.
