Hi guys,
I've been building a new floorpan for my baja for a while now and have decided to chuck it up on here for you all to have a look.
It started off as a pretty much stock 63 baja and it now evolving into something that i hope will be more capable off road and safer on road. It now
consists of:
K&L front end with brand new disk brake conversion, Custom vee dub coil over shocks with adapters welded in place all new steering components,15"
front wheels with 215/75 yokohama geolander tyres.
IRS converted rear with custom vee dub heavy duty pivot boxes, All new bushes and bearings, Drum brakes, 1600 kombi box turning my ever reliable
31x10.5 desert deulers.
2" Body lift constructed by us after realising the 3" body lift that i was using was too big....
Pushing it along will be my 1916cc with twin kads.
It will also be getting a complete re-wire so everything works properly!
All work has been carried out by myself, dave(davobuggy1641) occasionally matt(bajamat) he drops in every now and then and makes fun of us and daves
dad john richardson who happens to own the shed we are doing all of this in.
I'll put a bit of a timeline of pictures up but i didn't think to start taking photos until recently so there is alot i have missed.
It starts...
New floorpan with 3" body lift, the rear wheels are off daves buggy just for testing, and the front tyres were off my old buggy, they ended up being rubbish, They both went flat in about 12 hours.
test fitting the body on the pan with 3" lift kit
The next 2 are us realising the 3" body lift is too much
over a foot of unneseccary guard clearence
Thats matt, Just for a height comparison... he can bairly see over the roof. He is pretty tall.
Dave starting construction of the 2" body lift...
Making rear bit
Dave welding the lift kit together, Luckily i already had the front yoke from the guy who owned the baja before me. He got it made in an attempt to start making a lift kit. saved us alot of mucking around.
The body sitting on the 2" lift kit. looks more like a road car rather than some sort of off road racer.
I made all the spacers today for the other body mounts.
All the new steering bits and pieces...
New front brakes, can't wait to use them
John and i made some wheels last night, 15x7 for the rear. Beetle centres wouldn't fit my 8" bands for some reason so we went to johns vw parts
stock pile and found these 7" bands and used them. I painted them today along with the front wheels, not pictured. Will be getting all my tyres put
on tomorrow morning.
And thats about where we are up to... Will keep this updated from here on in, I was hoping to have it all done by the end of the christmas holidays
but it's looking mor like the end of january now, Things always take longer than you hope...
Looks great
What a massive day today! Got my tyres put on the rims, Started making new bump stops for the shock towers (some one had cut the old ones off for some
reason) Drilled and painted the lift kit, Dave spent most of the day replacing both front corners of the body where it was rusted out and the bolts
had broken off inside the body (what a mess!) Problem is, I forgot to take the camera today and we had to use Johns, I'll get the photos off him
tomorrow and chuck em up.
Mick.
Well done Mick , is looking good !!!
Thanks Andrew, Where the hell have you been? You dissappeared for a while there! I lost my phone along with your number so i'll have to get you to PM it to me.
Yea have been busy working in Central Queensland + missed Warwick due to a death in the Family .
Am only home for a few days for Christmas and then back to CQ till probabley March
Hey champ, Thats looking great!!!
Keep up the good work!
What are you doing with the old 3in lift??
The old 3" lift has been sold, I believe he is coming to pick it up after xmas sometime... If it falls through i'll let you know if you wanna buy
it.
And thanks, Getting closer to finish now!
g'day mick, baja's looking great
is all this happening after i saw it last??
good luck with the build
Hey buddy,
yeah all this is after you saw it last, after pulling the body off we realised how bad a state the baja was in. Looked pretty but she was quite
shattered. I'll try to grap some pics of the old floor and under the body.... How is your car going? I'm yet to see any pics did you get the webers sorted out?
Mick.
great stuff, looks like fun..........always wanted a lifted baja, they're cool as!
mate mine is cruising along. if i emailed you some pics would you put em up for me?? i'm done trying to do it myself. haha
webers are still as is, so no they're not sorted it runs alright to
drive it round the block whenever i feel the need. still rough as shit but.
keep us posted
yeah mate, e-mail me some photos i'm dying to see it! I'll chuck them up for you. bajamick@hotmail.com
Well, I work slowly.... I got a second hand set of tyres for the front decided on 215/75x15 yokohoma geolanders also got the rear shocks sorted. Also
the floor with the new 2" lift kit almost ready to be re-united with the body.
They are also all my wheels and tyres on it now.
One of the previous owners of the floorpan had cut the bump stops off the rear shock towers for some reason so dave and i fabbed up some custom ones...
The body is finally back on for good, a tube of sikaflex and 50 bucks worth of rubber seals later! I took a heap of photos of the extensive work dave did cutting out the rust and replacing the steel where the body bolts down at the front but they are not on my camera. I'll chuck them up when i get them, It's an interesting bit of handywork by dave. Anyway i am really happy with the height/stance. John also machined up the axles to accomodate the kombi CV's, I'll re-pack them tommorrow and fit them.
Then we decided it was all to big and dumped it on airbags! You can see how low it is by my fully sick non-existent guard clearence!
