The GRA-FAB Rod. More pics added!!
57 Chook Shed - December 2nd, 2010 at 09:24 PM

Hi ,
Thought I`d post some pics of the Volksrod that I`m building (along side other peoples stuff).
It`s going to be similar to the KCW built "Death" but with my own mark on it too.
It will be radically chopped, mildly channeled and with a transmission lift.
I`m thinking satin black exterior with gloss red interior.
Anyone got some spare drag slicks (must be massive!)
The donor car is a `63 standard (cheers Mattie/Dave!) which is a majorly solid car but has at some point had some kind of trauma to the roof above the passenger door so chopping it is not such a shame! I have an Oval roof front section and a rear window cut to let in aswell as the roof rom Matties Ragtop donor car.
I started by cutting the rear inner guards and luggage tray/firewall out (to be replaced with tubs) and then the front nose section got it!
Will channel it next (by lowering the body over the heater channels) by 50mm to get rid of that gap between the door/rear 1/4 and the bottom of the heater channel.
Heres some pics.........................
Cheers
Graham.

It is so much fun chopping cars!

57 Chook Shed - December 2nd, 2010 at 09:45 PM

reshaping to add some stiffness. I`m also going to run a couple of siffeners from bonnet catch to the beam.

57 Chook Shed - December 2nd, 2010 at 09:48 PM

Thats it so far. More to come...................

57 Chook Shed - December 2nd, 2010 at 09:49 PM

You`re not kidding helbus! Love the smell!

57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2010 at 09:48 PM

OK, so I channelled the body over the heater channels today after work. Went according to plan. Obviously I will need to either clearanve the doors or the heater channels to enable the doors to fit!

57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2010 at 09:52 PM

Thanks guys. Yeah been a while I suppose. Took time out from the scene for work, raising 3 kids and a couple of house moves.
Chucked in my job earlier in the year and started doing steel railings and auto gates. Then Mattie asked me if I wanted to do some welding repairs on his Ragtop and well here I am now with about 6 or so cars lined up..........

Dream come true mate!

Cheers,
Graham.

I reckon it looks neat. The guys in the US on Volksrods.com have questioned why I have gone to all this trouble, apparently there`s easier ways to lower a car(?)!!
That`s not the point, the point is to have cleaner lines and I dont like the look of an infill panel covering the side of the heater channel, I think it makes the sides too tall. So yeah it neatens it up and also has the added bonus of making it 2 inches lower. The roof chop, slammed front and rear frame raise will take care of that though!

57 Chook Shed - December 11th, 2010 at 09:00 AM

Oh yeah and incase anyone is wondering the heater channels will be internally braced to give them back some strength.

Doctor - December 11th, 2010 at 09:39 AM

Are you building a beam extension or buying one? Going to use VW beam or throw a straight axle in?

57 Chook Shed - December 11th, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Has to be VW beam! Will be extending the chassis before frame head.

57 Chook Shed - April 15th, 2011 at 08:26 PM

OK so the chop is under way (6 inch).

Flintstones - April 15th, 2011 at 09:41 PM

Only just seen this post and am liking the channeling job you've done.
The lines really do clean up nicely at the bottom edge.
Nice opportunity to graft in an oval window/grill section:yes:
Cheers
