Gra`s Kombi
57 Chook Shed - July 27th, 2003 at 10:43 PM

I`ve finally got myself a Kombi worth restoring!!
After a year or so of being told that my Chook Shed will always be just that...a shed!
It`s a `59 (we think, not had chance to check yet) with a full period camping interior which is very similar to a Westfalia,
by a company called S.A Campers. The interior needs to be stripped and re-varnished.
The Body is very straight apart from a dent in the drivers side at the back in the vent area, this looks as though it`ll push out pretty easily.
Needs sills and cab steps and a few outriggers but that does`nt phase me.
I`ll keep you all posted.
Cheers
Graham.

Anyone got a rear bumper to fit my Kombi?

57 Chook Shed - August 20th, 2003 at 06:03 PM

Here`s some shots of the interior, it is similar to the Westfalia conversion with the wood headliner etc. It has a fridge at the back left corner which is like the old
metal lined Esky`s. It`s got a compartment to put ice in and has a drain tube for when it melts, pretty cool!

57 Chook Shed - August 20th, 2003 at 06:05 PM

The fridge!!

57 Chook Shed - August 20th, 2003 at 06:06 PM

volma1 - August 20th, 2003 at 06:46 PM

Your Kombi looks great but it is either a late 60 or 61 model as my kombi is an early 60 with semaphores. volma

type3kid - August 20th, 2003 at 06:55 PM

nice work man, can't wait to see it restored. go the 17's and dump, it, she'll look damn fine!

57 Chook Shed - August 20th, 2003 at 08:09 PM

Volma, I went on Vintagebus.com and it came up as being built in November `59. The chassis number guide in the West Coast Metric catalogue says it`s between `60-61 so not sure.
Cheers for the replys guys!
It`s gotta be the 17`s!
Graham.

are the bullets aftermarket?
that's what throws me.
it's got semaphores though, so they couldn't be, could they?

How's the resto going! done anthing to it yet?
Rob.....

57 Chook Shed - October 8th, 2003 at 08:51 PM

Nah, nothing much done yet mate. Got to put my shed up before I start!!!
Just built a new house so have heaps of other stuff to fit in aswell.
I did score a 1600tp motor from a Notch that we wrecked at the weekend, gonna convert that to Type 1 cooling and see how she runs, apparently it runs well, just needs an oil leak sorting.
Hoping to have it on the road for Nambucca if it`s on next year? Should be cruisin over with Dave (57 Kombi) and a few others (Dan, Andrew??)
Once I do the welding and brakes and put this motor in it will be a driver, although I do want to convert it to straight axle using the same brackets as 57Kombi, front I will lower with a cut and turn or look into getting some of those very nice reworked spindles that 57Kombi has also fitted. It`s all a case of how many golden nugets I can get hold of!
Been trying to sell my Oval to raise a bit of ca$h but I`m in two minds wether to sell it or not. I think a Splitty and an Oval are the perfect driveway partners!
Thanks for the interest in the progress Rob.
Cheers
Graham.

57 Chook Shed - October 8th, 2003 at 08:59 PM

Sorry Dan, forgot to reply about the bullets.
Not sure mate, it`s had holes cut in the back for the round rear indicators (60-61) so I`d say the bullets were fitted at a later date too. I suppose the only way to check would be to see if the holes for the bullets look as though they have been cut or are stamped into the front panel.
Cheers
Graham.
