Dino's '61 Split Panel Bus
PASHN8 - June 24th, 2011 at 01:15 PM

Hi guys,

So, apart from an Oval, there is one other vintage VW i've always lusted after and that is an early split window bus. Their prices have always been a little high for me in unrestored form and after seeing the costs of repairing the metal work once they are rusted, it always put me off.

I always keep an eye on the various cars floating around and fast forward to a couple of weeks ago I found the splitty i'd been waiting for in the hands of kombi guru Rob King. After a few conversations and advice from Bish (thanks mate!) and then on the phone to Rob straight after, the deal was done and I headed off to pick him up last Saturday from Geelong and bring him home.

History that I know, Rob had it for around 7 years and has been repairing it slowly. When he said most of the hard work had been done he wasn't joking! Floor has been replaced, outriggers, jacking points, front floor, nose cone, doors, it really has had some time spent on it and all done very nicely.

Here are some pics I wanted to share from last Saturday. Huge thanks also to Banksy for keeping it for me until I free up some more space at home!

The splitty is extremely solid and i'm absolutely stoked to have picked it up. Plans are a full paint inside and out, slam with narrowed beam, discs, interior re-trim, some sounds and a slightly different method of forward propulsion!

Nice pick up mate.:tu:

Can't wait to hear more about the "slightly different method of forward propulsion"
