I bought this 64 bug a month or so ago, i was told it hadnt been run in a long time worked fine before they parked it. I wanted a project to tinker
with so assumed it was cactus and a rebuild would be part of the adventure. I havent really done anything to it since picking it up just started
trying to accumulate some parts and try to get it started.
So far:
I have picked up some very 2nd hand earlier model (blade i think they are called) bumpers. (need 2 more overriders if anyone has some )
New Battery
New Plugs
Some fuel line
and a new ignition barrel and key (didnt come with one)

Plans:
getting running and fix any dodge things that have been done to it over the decades. Im not a purist so im not restoring it but i want it to look like
a 64 or similar year. so chrome bars, blinkers on the fenders, horn grills and maybe the swan looking mirrors and some chrome trim will all go back
on.
Then slam it!
First hiccup was after i put the new battery in and went to kick it over the engine turned but no spark at all, 1 minute later cabin filled with smoke
and the Earth cable for the battery was smoldering and starting to catch light. FUN! New earth cable in problem solved.
Last night i had a mechanic friend come over and after changing the way the ignition barrel was wired we had power at the coil then a clean of the
points and BROOOM BROOM she started
WIN!

Just a suggestion,.. before you go putting chrome trim 'back' on,.. you might want to investigate if you have a 'standard' model or not.
Standards did not come with chrome trim.
From reading posts on here they are quite popular at the moment.

One other suggestion if you're new to volkies,..
Please remove that plastic fuel filter from the engine bay.
Others on here will atest to them being a major fire risk when in that
location.

right with him. Ill get rid of it for sure now you tell me that
I dont really like the alternator setup on it cause it looks for want of a better word "ARSE" but for now its working so ill deal with that when it
becomes an issue.
My parents had VWs when i was a kid and before so i have vague memories of them catching on fire and loosing a split pin on the Iron Cove Bridge and
the wheel going AWOL ahh the memories.
i have the original books to one of the beetles ill upload some pics tonight.
I remember seeing this one on ebay.

after i looked at it, it didnt seem to bad so was just hoping to get it cheap.
here are the pics of the original owners manuals of a vw my dad had. He also owned the golden fleece that the stamp in the book shows.
Got some goodies today slowly getting the 60s parts accumulated for the ol girl. ill take some better pics of the other stuff tomorrow.

not a lot of progress due to my leg still making me crippled but we did an oil change and new points, started pulling the rusted bolts off the old
bars and trying to free up the replacement bolts on the bars i got. Added some much better looking headlights and got rid of the sports wheel. All
very minor all steps in the right direction

car looks 61 62 to me the bonnet release on the passenger side. could be older. anyone else on here spot more early features other than the number
plate light ?
are their seat belts fitted ? if so factory location ie threaded holes in the b pillars . maybe had trafficators ? check to see any signs of filling
in the holes on the outside of the b pillars.
by b pillar i am meaning the post the door shuts to near the rear quarter window in case your not aware of the area. any way good luck with the

2 rubber bungs for lower door hinge screws makes it at least 61 or earlier
I have no papers for it and the QLD roads guy i spoke with said it was a 64 when i asked. The plate in the wheel well is impossible to read where else is there markings. i know the speedo has a date stamped on back of that i can check that out i guess.
also if it is a standard it would have black painted front quarter vent windows.
you dont need to take the door trims off to find the trim holes open the boot.
lift the rear seat cushion out and get the chassis no. from the backbone of the tunnel
speedo could give an answer if still original. happy hunting. i am curious to see what year model this is now .
oh ! yes and it has a glove box lid not found on standard models
what numbers do i look for to indicate year in Chassis number? and whats the brake down of all of it
first 2 numbers are 62 looks like im re naming the thread?

grinded back the shaved holes for the blinkers and did a test fit will put the other 1 in tomorrow and then wire them up. need to get some horn grills
next.

are you going to strip your pan halves and paint them? you may find rust when you go at them with a wire wheel
Just your usual quick smash repairs from decades ago.
It's a body off job but safest fix is a new frame head.
