(Melbourne West) Need a hand to get an engine started
m4co - February 26th, 2015 at 08:26 PM
As the title says, is anyone around Melbourne western suburbs willing to lend me a hand in starting my 1200 engine? I had it running originally but
then I replaced the carb as it was leaking from the throttle shaft, new plugs, leads, condenser, points, distributor cap and button and can not get it
to fire.
I have static timed it, gapped the plugs, points and valves. I have fuel and spark but I can't get it to run, after a bit of cranking it does let out
a few puffs as if it wants to start but doesn't.
Also, the spark plugs on cylinder 3 and 4 are wet but are dry on 1 and 2.. don't know what to make of that.
I have beer for your help

If you send me 2 tickets from Newcastle to Melbourne with accommodation I will come and have a look for you.

You have spark,you have fuel..
Do you have the ignition leads on correctly?
I only ask because a kombi i recently purchased and then sold had the leads on wrong and after a bit of head and rs scratching we noticed ....

Yep, the leads are on correct
I feel like I've triple checked everything
I bet it is something simple but this is my first VW and I'm still learning

Hmmm might be a little far for a 6 pack but I am assuming that you have checked bugmaniaar's suggestions. these little motors are fairly touchy at
times and lt doesn't take a lot to make them hard to start.
follow through logically & good luck. Les

Got it running!
Was playing around with it for a while today and, wait for it.....
It was the bloody spark plugs!
I bought New NGK B5HS plugs for it not long ago and it was running fine on them but it looks like it doesn't like them anymore?
I put in the old Bosch plugs and it fired right up, so i'll be ordering 4 new Bosch W8AC plugs for it.
