Earl Pickerin - February 8th, 2009 at 11:11 AM

Hi all, I have recently purchased a beetle that I am looking to do up. I was wondering if anyone can help with year and model identification?? The numbers that I have managed to source from the rear floor and under the bonnet are as follows : Man# ( Chassis?) 119251084 and the following numberss are also on the plate installed under the bonnet/hood Type : 1-255A S43
There is one other number on this plate that I am not sure that it refers to? 1140162 Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Earl

Hi guys, thanks for the help with the year model. Being new to Dubs completely I may need some help along the line with the resto, will keep you all posted.
Where do I start to look for the engine number?? It all looks very compact in there!! Seller informs me that it is now sporting a 1600 so I am keen to get this info sorted as well. Gives me a start on a manual so that I can get started though so cheers.

The engine number should be on the flat part of the engine case just below where the generator/ alternator stand bolts to the case.

You can't have too many manuals, I have over 10
different ones - workshop -owner - maintainence - owners handbook -
The Haynes ones are OK - also the Australian Gregorys/scientific publications one is also OK...

keep an eye on Ebay.. manuals always on there..

there is also the late John Muirs book - the idiots guide -
can be helpful - the Robert bentley [VW of america] manual...

keep an eye on 2nd hand bookshops too...

cheers
