I'm pretty new to veedubs and this has got me foxed, it might be simple to someone who 'knows' though - so I hope you don't mind me asking for a little advice here...

Anyway, I've been trying to replace the tailpipes on my bug (without much success - the old ones are pretty much rusted in place), but while I was fiddling around with them I noticed that after running the engine one of the pipes gets much hotter than the other one. I would have expected them to get to pretty much the same temperature...
After a half hour drive I can grip the left pipe easily, but the right one is too hot to hold - do they track back to two cylinders each (in which case I guess half my engine might have a problem), or do they both come from the same source in the muffler?

Anyway, confused - and without the proper tools (yet) to investigate much further. Does anyone have any ideas ?

maybe the mufler has failed in one half of it so id be lookin there firstly
