Pictures in signatures slowing things down.

Hi

I have noticed some users are putting large pics in there sigs, it is really slowing the forum down, can something be done?

I agree. I've seen the same problem on other forums, some of which have decided to ban pics in sigs. You have your avatar for showing a pic, there's no need to put pics in sigs as well. Pics in sigs break up the flow of a topic, and are a pain for those of us who don't have broadband.

Is mine too big?

Hi Blackmath

Yours is one of them, the funny thing is the pics in your sig dont stay in my cach so they need to be downloaded every post that I visit that you have posted on.

File caching is set up on the browser side Steve... so that is something you need to fix not the person with the image...

That said ... I can't see the point in having an image in the sig ... if your avatar isn't enough make a better avatar...

Yep i agree get rid of them

That's true for most web pages, but some web pages have a bit of code that tells the browser not to cache, regardless of the user's browser settings. This is done on pages that regularly update, like forums and news sites, to ensure that you're always seeing the latest stuff. It's a good idea, but it does mean that those annoying sig pics have to be downloaded every time.

I was just wondering Steve what internet connection are you running xcause i went over boozers house and he has broardband and it dident slow it down at all, so are you speaking liek 56k users? but if it is a inconvienece i will delete it to make it a better experience for everybody
:)

Hi Black math

Im still using a 56k modem but it connects between 22 & 36k Its never been over 36k. I live at the maximum distance from the exchange so it really affects my connection speed and adsl is not offered because Im so far away. If you can cut down your sig size it would help. I was at VW54s house the other day and he clicked on this topic and your sig came into view a bit at a time and he is on broadband.

In your face steve:P:P:P kidding man kidding

HotRodMatt - October 1st, 2003 at 03:16 PM

Why don't we just kill them?

Keep interesting pics for posts and small avatars ... we don't need to see them everywhere like some plague.

If you really think we need to see them make an animated gif for your avatar and have them swapping over.

The last few days has been an example of what happens when files keep being passed over.....

Good point! Not only do pics in sigs slow down my page loads and cost me more in bandwidth, they also cost the site more money to pay for bandwidth. I say get rid of them.

Black_math - October 1st, 2003 at 04:19 PM

vanderaj reworked mine for me now its all good and if he tells me to get rid of it ile do it.
