I think I need to update my avatar to one of them flashy gif one's.

Can someone please advise me of how I go about creating one.

Hi 72,
An "animated gif" is usually created with an image manipulation program e.g. the excellent "Paint Shop Pro" program comes with a companion program called "Animation Shop", at around $170.

You can also get freeware and shareware programs to do this; go to
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=freeware+animated+gif+editor&ie=UTF-8&a...
and you'll find a heap of options.

That said, some animated avatars are downright distracting...

But there was talk of limiting the size of avtars.
