Gday all !
JCARRION - July 15th, 2008 at 07:53 PM

Hi people !!!

I have just found this amazing forum and I am delighted !

Just arrived in Australia , -I am from Spain - and the second day here I saw a '67 Beetle ... "for sale" . I allways felt some curiosity those aircooled oddities , so this was the perfect timing ! New country .. and new car !

So I bought it . Happy car and happy owner.

One month later : Out of battery . ( My lady almost snaps a leg push-starting it ) New steering box . Bumper fall off . full catastrophical electrical short circuit (smoke and dashboard (?) fireworks ) . Main seal blown , spun bearing . Parking spot ruined with oil . also Banned from my Company parking spot for the oil leaks. spent 400 $+ in tools already . Engine out , 300$ , +30$ daily until I find a new engine ! .

anyway ... I am still happy to own a bug .I hope to be in a much better mood as soon as She runs and drives again .

Thanks all for this forum , - I am gonna read it all !- and excuse me my pigeon English

Javier

Hi all , and Thanks for your welcome !

I am based in Rockdale (10 km south of Sydney's CBD)

and I am a bit lost , actually . I am so new here (in OZ) that I can barely find an address. I write/read English but I can't still comunicate by phone clearly :( . My local mechanic is telling me that Its almost impossible to find a 2nd hand fresh Beetle engine .
Recon prices "start" at 2400 (classic VeeDub , Campsie) but as soon as they open it "they will tell me" (= Its gonna be a hell more expensive)

no-one seems to have off-the-selve exchange recon engines (or at least I can't find it ). I paid 3000 bucks for the bug , and It seems that I need to pay more than 3000 for the Engine . Cool !

Other options range from :

->Industrial engines (???) seen on ebay around 1000 dollars . Still not sure if they ll fit.

->Second hand "fresh(?)" 1600 TP with carbie , alternator and new heads from Wayne Unanderra 2000 bucks !

->Reconditioning my unit . Starting at 2400$ , but as the case is got a spun bearing , Its gonna be a lot more. I know it .

->Ebay. Race-spec 1870 , stroker crank , twin dell-ortos' , amazing . Hand-Built ->Probbably will explote as soon as I install -it . 2500+

plus probbably 600+ of labour , clutch , and assorted "now-that-we-got-the-engine-out-we-should-put-also"s

I am seriously considering dumping the bug. Leaving Her in the workshop as payment for the work so-far done (removal of the engine ) and forget the whole idea.

Thanks for listening my rants.

DON"T DUMP IT YET........put an add here on AVD for an engine wanted......surely someone down that way has a spare??? You should be able to get a good one 2nd hand for a lot less than $2000....
Don't give up just yet...

Mick058 - July 17th, 2008 at 07:26 AM

Javier.

Engine's seem to come up enough. Check the 'trading post' aswell... You should be able to pick-up at 1600 from $500 to $1000 which would be in fine running order.

$600 may be a little expensive for labour???

Well , 2 moths later... and after using a lot of cash , blood , "sickies" . my little beetle is running up again .

I ended up buynig a industrial engine -brand new , SP , made in Germany!- for 1600 $ (ebay). as advised I had to replace the tinware , generator ,distributor , carbie , sparkplugs , extractors , etc..

I put a new clutch , pressure plate , tranny oil seals , reinstalled it .

and IT WORKS ! . It works as =I suppose= a brand new beetle in the 60's did. Engine still being break-in but the power is amazing (comparred to the old one ). It simply doesnt vibrate at-all. I can keep with the traffic even in highways !

-happy again-

thanks all for your support
