Hello Rossi46, welcome to AVD :) I'm an ex-brit too and found the quality of VW's over here amazing (very little rust compared to the UK!).
You'll soon get used to the parts situation, there are numerous suppliers but all have varying levels of customer service. If you're moving to Brissie you can't beat Micks Motors on the North Side in my opinion.
Either way there are plenty of dedicated VW lovers, and plenty of advice to be found on here too. There's also a few shows etc scattered throughout the year.
Your Bug looks nice from the pic (so do the bikes!), I'm guessing it's had some mods with the late decklid. What else have you done to it? Definitely get some more pics up too

Nick

djnee - December 2nd, 2009 at 04:40 PM

You're going to probably hate me for saying it, as you've probably put your heart and soul into your car, but from experiences i've read i reckon your better off selling your car and getting another when you get over here. (sorry!)
I'm from the UK too, and the quality of the cars here is so much better for doing stuff to. Bolts on old Beetles in Aus actually undo instead of shearing off! Plus as mentioned, the vents at the back for cooling might be problematic etc.
I will try and find the link, but there's a website for Brit ex-pats that i used when we first got over here....and i read so many posts on there from people who brought their cars over and fully wished they hadn't as it became a nightmare.
Like i say...sorry to be a stick in the mud, but thought i'd mention it. :tu:

The condition of the older cars here is amazing, so you won't have to make a 72 look like a 60's one ;) :)

Rossi46 - December 2nd, 2009 at 05:30 PM

Vents on the back no problem as I have a vented engine lid, full flow oil cooler system with fan, Dtm fan housing for extra cooling, being converting it to US California spec for cooling, as far as nuts and bolts go I changed them all when I built the car so that should be no problem. So I relly wont have anything to do to it when it gets there.

What are pre 70's cars going for out there ? what is the parts supply like ? what is the pricing like for parts, I was told it is expensive for parts, so in my way of thinking it would be better and cheaper to bring my completed car.:tu::smilegrin:

hellbugged - December 2nd, 2009 at 05:47 PM

bring it out with you as it's nice for everyone to say it's easier to buy one, but to build one back to the quality of yours will be tens of thousands!

love the Rossi handle and camel vespa.........Vali is DA MAN!

I'd deffo agree with that!

I think it's down to the size of the population here compared to the UK.
For example, in the UK you can search on Ebay for a part and get about 300 items listed, whereas here you'd probably get 10 or less....so those precious 10 will then have more people bidding on them.
As for actual shops, they seem very well stocked, but again a bit more expensive compared to the UK.
It's all do-able though :)

Although not a show winner, we found the price of our car to be quite reasonable (67 model) at $3000. I'd say that ovals seem to be ten-a-penny here and seem quite cheap in comparison to the UK....but i'm basing my judgement on my beetle experiences back when i owned my first one in the 90's...might be totally different now.

That the plan ! I spent enough on it as it is, and the shipping is cheaper and easier than trying to find one when I get there, and like you say it could cost me thousands when am there :tu:;)

Yeah sure!
Sorry....wasn't trying to say your idea was crazy, but just wanted to mention that some had found it a nightmare from beginning to end.
I'm sure yours will be smooth sailing and hassle free!

When do you get out here then? Bet you can't wait?
Best thing we've ever done!

Rossi46 - December 2nd, 2009 at 06:59 PM

ancientbugger - December 10th, 2009 at 09:23 AM

Maybe we should start a completely seperate section for us Poms on this site as there's so bloody many of us. If you have any problems with getting over just claim refugee status.......oh! don't forget to turn off the gas and turn the lights off when you leave:D
Stef, whereabouts are you from?

1303Steve - December 10th, 2009 at 10:19 AM

Hi

Come on out, the more VW enthusiasts the better.

Maybe we should start up pom to Oz dictionary for you poms.

Wings are mudguards or guards

Motors are in cars not a generic description

1/4 windows are called flipper windows, I think poms call them side lights?

Our headlights have high and low beam.

Etc.

My wife is Scottish, came out as a kid, she speaks English now. Still has some funny sayings, like map book and Hoover.

Steve
