Hi All,
Just a quick post to say Howdy, my name is Renee and my hubby is Neil.
After what seems like a gazzillion years DH has just very kindly bought us a 1968 Beetle powered by a Subie 1.8ltr Turbo plus a list of other mods a
mile long.
This is our first beetle, but I think I have wanted one since I was 4 due to my mum and sister both having one each.
We believe our beetle was featured in VWMA issue no 1.
Neil already has a list of wants to add to that mile long list, so I guess my addiction has spread over to him lol...
We also own a couple of Subie's a GT Foz and a RX wagon and a little Peugeot 205
Cheers
Welcome to the forums, looks like a really nice beetle although i must say i love the sound of a hotted dak dak but still i bet that thing blows many cars away
gooday welcome to Air Cooled
Thanks guys, I know every time one of us starts him up it's weird not hearing the dak dak sound.
But it is funny to see the looks on peoples faces when you are bedside 'em and blow 'em off.
We dropped him off at our mates workshop yesterday for a few minor adjustments and to get that wish list happening ( he is a Subie mechanic and a
Rally driver, he was itching to take him for a blat, the look on his face was definitely priceless when he returned from putting him through the
ringer). He smiled gave a thumbs up, and said "Approve"...........
Welcome and I love that car. I would have loved to have bought it myself, but I don't think my wife would have been happy with me since I have been
building my Beetle for near 3 years.
I don't personally know the car, but have seen lots of photos and I'm sure you will be real happy with it. Congratulations!
Kev
Thanks Kev, we would love to do one up ourselves but due to Neil being in the Navy and deployed a lot and being posted all the time it just wouldn't
happen.
I saw the thread with your bug, very jealous it is looking hot!

Okay..... So at the moment I am trying to research brakes.
After being dyno'd with sensible 87.7kw atw, I figure stronger brakes are a must (along with an ever growing 'wish list').
With only having recently purchased the 'Green Hornet', it is hard finding out what is currently bolted to the lil fella. I believe it has had a
brake upgrade, and by going by what I can see and what I have read, it is the standard upgrade kit. Trying to find out what fits through google, it is
proving harder than I thought with out knowing the 'exact' setup that is on it.
It currently has fitted F= 205/55/16 and R= 225/50/16's. From what I can gather, I think it has the standard VW 4 stud pattern (4 x 130?). Rims are
Simmons V4's.
I am currently looking into the kit that VWCOOL has listed, but due to being a noob, PM's are not allowed.
Take this post as a way forward to my 5th post, and also a reach-out for some general info on brakes (yes, I am searching the forums as I type this
(well, not as I type this, cause that would be multi tasking... I'll leave that for the wife).......

Mods are to accommodate a bigger donk, so the current ones will not suffice.... and they are barely able to cope with the current power att.
P.S. Have planned a dry run/dummy fit of WRX STI rear brembo's this weekend.... fingers crossed.
This is my fifth post..... now I can PM.... Yippeeeee
Thought I might as well post my wish list.
New ECU. Looking into the Haltec Sprint 500. After talking to my tuner, this was recommended. The current set up is an early Holden MOTEC system, from
roughly 87, which puts it in the VL commondore era. My tuner mentioned that he has to tune it with a screw driver....lmao.. but I guess that is not
that funny given that is how carbs are tuned [Hides under rock]. The current set up does not allow for barometric changes either, and with living in
canberra, where the temp is as random as Charlie Sheen, I figure it wont hurt. Again, this will also accommodate the future donk (planning a EJ25T).
Will also be a good excuse to do a way with the dizzy, and use a coil pack... again, easier to tune.
Water to Air intercooler from an Sube RS lib.
New Gbox = Have been told about a suby box, that has been reversed.. but for a nice price tag to come with it. Was recommended by a VW enthusiast here
in canb. Apparently he has 5 dubs. [This will be hopefully sooner rather than later, as the current box does not like 2nd, and also is not a fan ofstaying in reverse]. Also something was mentioned bout a VW Bus version 6 or something. Still need to look into this.
Seats = Have seen MX5 seats in a convertible, and looked the part. Not to mention, performed well. I am looking into this, as well as a couple of
other seats such as SCAT PRO90's, and also a set of 2 door STI seats. Seats need to be of decent quality, cause the lil fella has Koni's attached,
which makes the ride 'FUN', and also with the MOWAF being only 5ft neat...(Now, that is SHORT!) it makes it a bit hard for her to reach the
pedals.
Interior..... we wont go there yet.
Electrics = It has been converted to 12v, but looks like a a bunch of worms behind the dash. That, and we have a few switches that we are still trying
to work what it is they actually do (kinda like me when there is car racing on the tele).
Driving lights = researching
New 'old skool' gauges = researching. Currently have my eyes on the Cockpit Royale gauges on the CB Performance website ( Also has some NICE VW
magazines called AIRMIGHTY which I am currently trying to get sent)
That's bout it for now.... the rest is just cosmetic like new bumpers, matching mirrors, new custom running boards......
Happy croozen

[Wish list looking good for approval, as it is 'Her' car ]
hi Renee,
good to see another nice VW in Canberra. (I'm originally from Queanbeyan) anyway, check out the non-vw engine forum on this site. Lots of Subi
info there. Re the brakes, look at the circuit racing forum also on this site and I'd suggest buying the next VWMA mag due out next week if you
haven't already seen these as there are some advertises in there that have brake upgrades.
Thanks lou for a point in the right direction. Greatly appreciated.
