Hi from Canberra

Hi all!

Making the move to Canberra for work in a week or so, and really wanted to catch up with some VW people to give me the heads-up about the local scene.

I have the VW sickness, having restored a number of beetles and kombis in NZ, and can't believe how expensive cars are in Australia!

I would like to get another VW for my daily, and need to get an idea of where the wreckers are, what good VW garage's etc are around and shows.

Can anyone help? Maybe catch up for a beer or something?

Regards

Joe.

hey joe,
Im not in canberra anymore but lived there for 30 years. Give peter at canberra vw centre a call.
Dont think he does air cooled vws anymore but he should be able to point you in the right direction.
Have fun, don

I dropped into their Tuggeranong branch to see about an aircooled part and was told in no uncertain terms that they don't do airciooled anymore. (Fair enough, there's probably a fortune to be made in fixing broken Golfs etc these days). Beetle Exchange have been great for parts. There's also another guy/guys close to Canberra who have hundreds of old VWs out on a farm somewhere so probably a good source of secondhand parts. Don't have the details to hand but they advertise on Gumtree often enough.

And welcome to Canberra btw :) I'm not new to the city but I am new to VW so finding my way around the scene myself.

Hi Joe, welcome to the nation’s capital.

I am new to the VW scene myself. The beetle exchange seems to be the only place in Canberra which deals in classic VWs. They always have a couple of beetles and VWs for sale and they normally offer 3 month 5000 km warranty on their vehicles. They also sell projects if you want to go down that route. I have gotten quotes for parts from them and seem a little expensive.
I am restoring a 67/69 beetle and find that if you need a lot of parts the best way is to take a day trip to Sydney and buy all the parts you need. Much cheaper than postage…

I don’t know if there are any VW meets in Canberra and would like to know as well.

Cheers
Joel.
