The plates on the trailer look like South Australian plates.

Nah, look NSW to me, judging by the colour & the configuration of numbers/letters.

Calcool - July 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 PM

As soon as I saw that pic I thought Graham Lees who used to own Beetle wreckers in Brookvale who was rumoured to have a Beetle from each year from the 40's till the 80's. I think this car was one of 2 sent to Australia for Assessment before official importation in 1954, and it was found on King island or a similar island parked under a tree looking out to sea!

I saw it at the Penrith Beelte Birthday celebration in 1998 I think.

Maybe he is moving to SA and taking it with him??? Or a new owner

I think there was a dream to have a Museum with one of each model Beelte on display. There were some great stories as to how he accumulated cars over the years, one vehilce was seen in the background in a story in the UK on 60 Minutes and Graham tracked the story and location down and bought the car back to Australia.

Cheers,

David

I thought the one that was at Vics and Ex Lees was LHD.

The one on the trailer is certainly RHD.
I cannot get to Vic's website- says its been suspended.

Maybe ,just maybe, another one has surfaced. Would take the number of split Beetles to 30 that are now known in OZ.

If it was on King Island, i would of known about it and it would of been complety stuffed. Cars only last 10 years there.....

Considering most of the 100 odd cars that Vic had in storage were last registered around the year 1986, I would be guessing that this thing landed in the brookvale collection about that time too.
So i would say you wouldn't know about this car Will because you probably weren't even being thought about at that time young willy.

Still would of known. Family used to live there from 1966-1992. Still might of slipped through the cracks but you never know.
