Know a good painter in Melbourne?
Karmann Bug - October 8th, 2003 at 01:01 PM

Has anyone here had good experience with a painter in Melbourne. I don't want a cheap looking job which will last 5 years.
Anyone been to VW Performance Centre for spraying?

I used Jeff Hind Smash Repairs at 2 Griffith Ave, East Bentleigh (9563 7955).

I was happy with the work and price and the shop seemed well managed and organised. As my painting requirement was just a blend job after panel work, it's just standard enamel, not a stand-out job, so I'm not saying that these guys are ace painters, just that they're OK to deal with.

Yep I am involved in the paint and panel trade, but strictly "Accident Repairs".

I myself have never had to get a car painted anywhere as I have always done it myself, so I don't have any suggestions sorry.

I can offer some advice.

Ask lots of questions and make sure you and the painter both understand exactly what you are after. Quite often it is mis interpretation or poor explanation that results in an unhappy customer.

If it is a good quality repaint and the vehicle is meticulously looked after, it will last more than 5 years.

Unfortunatley unless it is a bare metal respray no-one will give a very long term guarantee as they will not know what is underneath.

Rust will always come back eventually. All cars are rusting now as I type this.

We fix new cars with < 10m on the clock and between the panel surfaces there is evidence of rust. The vehicle has to be built from bare steel and the paint cannot get between the spotwelded joins.

You can help prevent it returning quickly by treating the vehicle with a rust preventative after it is painted - before it is put together.

Hope this helps. :D

im an apprentice in the trade - in melbourne:) only smash repair work aswell though.. one day i'll talk the boss into re-spraying the beetle..

the shop i work in most of the time DOES do resto work.. but very expensive.. it is a lot of work to re-spray a car to a good standard.. then panel-beaters dont hand the car over to the sprayer ready to paint..

ultimatley.. you get what you pay for:)
