Removing rear apron
lil bug - November 5th, 2003 at 09:17 PM

To remove the rear apron is it better/easier to drillout the spot welds or get a chisel under and knock em off...?

Or is there a betta way...?

I don't know how to attack it... Help!

Hi

Wire brush the area, then wave a bit of heat over the area from an oxy to highlight the welds, use special spot weld removing drill bits you can by from engineers supply places. Avoid drilling right through into the metal you want to keep.

There was a recent edition of VW Trends where the did a tech article on removeable rear aprons showed step by step how to do it.

i`ve just had a go at cold chiseling some spot welds ...and it can tear both sections if your not care full ..then tried drilling them out with a normal drill bit had to drill right through ..holes in both pieces ..because some one said that you could not get spot weld drill bits .. hope that helps ..get the right tool if you can :)
