Just about to get stuck into my engine bay. Just bought an old 73 kombi 1600 with work needed (dont they all?). The battery compartment floor is nearly completely gone, anyone done this before? Any advice ?
ps I cant weld, but will give it a go,,
Cheers
Dave

this i did for a beetle if not the same as ..please disregard i`ve done this not much i can tell you ....clean area with wire buff ..on grinder.. cut out all rust back to good metal ... buy black sheet metal.. place under floor where hole is jack up to floor ..with jack:D..not to hard so that it distorts ..mark area of hole on to sheet metal ....cut out slight larger than the out line with jigsaw ..clean up .. jack back into hole ..must fit with little gap ... weld with mig or oxy ...if useing mig weld in lots of little welds so not to distort through heat ..grind clean.. rewelding any holes you find ...that`s how i did mine ,best of luck ... oh i welded from the top ... :thumb

How thick does the plating have to be for welding?

if you have a mig you should be able use the same size as the car body .. i`d use 1mm because you can get a little more heat in to the weld before it blows a hole in the car pannel if your not real experianced in welding . try to get most of the heat in to the thicker stuff..slow and easy wins the race
