Ha Ha Ha - Real flames
helbus - December 2nd, 2003 at 09:00 PM

I am laughing now, but not on Saturday.

I was welding a small rust section on the Beetle under the LHF guard back near the A pillar.

I removed the trims and seat inside for safety and had the LHF wheel off for access.

Just as I was doing the last bit under the guard, I heard 'Whoosh' and the whole of under the front burst into flames.

I had filled up with petrol just before going there and there must have been a small amount of expansion and the fuel had pissed out of the breather hose and on/ in the jack.

I never smelt it and never saw it all that time, but now the flames were coming out 3 sides of the front of the car.

Being in a safe workshop with all equipment handy I sauntered over to the fire extinguisher and with a couple of quick dabs it was out.

What a rush that was.

Moral of the story. - Be prepared for the worst and don't think it wont happen to you.

First time in my life I have set a car on fire and I have worked on them every day of my working life. :D:D:D

Went home and had a :beer

:jesus must have saved me. I wasn't even singed.

I blame it all on the iron oxide poisoning that cars get.

Fixed now. Respray over Christmas.
