First post!

Well it hasn't died, but it's on the way out.

It's a cream headliner and it's pretty stained and marked in a few places. The rest of the interior is already black so I want to change it anyway - anyone know if I could use a vinyl dye of something similar to go over it with?

Call me lazy if you like but the idea of replacing it completely makes me shudder.

If you want to go grey velour I will have one for sale next week.

I have seen vinyl paints used on headliners but it usually cracks and peels after a few months.

Hmmm...grey wont really match up as the rest is black velour, but thanks for the offer. If you come by any black ones you might have a buyer though.

Crazy idea - running shoe dye. Apart from the smell it might work...

I think you will find if you try to remove the liner it will fall apart in your hands as your taking it out.

You would be better off spraying it with some vinal spray paint most colours available from your local Auto accessory shop.

Probally take 2 tins and remove the windows first save sufficating your self.

Before you paint the surface make sure you wipe it down good with Prepsol or Wax n GRease remove it will make the paint bond better n it might not crack as Matt said..

I painted the headlining in our bus with trim paint I got from a trimmer. It doesn't look like it is going to come off in a hurry.

I suppose it is all about the prep work.

Our Beetle had the headliner painted black (from off white) some time in it's past and it has held up pretty good too.

We painted the headliner in our Kombi, was disgustingly stained cream and we painted it with a grey coloured vinyl paint available from Supercheap. Our paint has not cracked yet and was done about 12 months ago. They do have black. The brand was VHT penetrating colour dye for vinyl and carpet. Certainly gave Bert the Bus a facelift and brightened the whole van up.

If your worried about the Heat paint it a light colour as a Black will suck the heat into the car n hold it.

But black usually hides all the defects if theres any.

Well how about that, my first post. Glad to say that I've learned a lot since then I did end up using VHT vinyl dye to repaint my headliner and it worked a treat. It took about 4 hours to mask everything off though! The finished product is smooth and hasn't cracked at all. Time will tell on how long it lasts but it was a LOT cheaper than buying and fitting a new one!
