Does anyone know whether the extenal skin is folded over the inner frame of the engine cover of a 61 split kombi and spot welded or just folded. The is no evidence of any spot welds along the folded edge. Any suggestions on how to unfold the egde without causing to much damage to the outer skin? Part of the inner frame is rusted and needs replacement.

Easy way to find out if theres Spot welds would be to hit the edge with a wire bush in a electric drill.

I would say thats its spot welded for sure knowing VW

Or you could use paint stripper on the inner edge.
