splitty wheel arches
robnjo - April 4th, 2004 at 04:54 PM

my wheel arches are non-existant(been cut out...??)
so what are my options? will any kombi wheel arch fit?
what year/s can I use?
I'm not going "showroom" but would like it to look normal.
please point me in the right direction.
Rob

you could weld up bay ones, but it wouldnt look correct, as they stick out a bit, wich the split ones do not, so really you should get split ones.

Schofields in the U. K. do them, check out any copy of volksworld.

Ring some sheet metal places and ask if you bring in a profile of the wheelarch, if they could make it for you? You might be surprised.

robnjo - April 6th, 2004 at 07:15 PM

thanks hellbus and guys,a profile of a splitty arch? not sure what you mean.
should I take a pic of the real thing or ?

helbus - April 6th, 2004 at 11:20 PM

A profile is when you get another bit of sheetmetal or masonite, and shape it so it sits side on to the wheelarch and has the shape cut into it.

This will give them a pattern to go by.

You could make another pattern/ profile of the whole wheel arch also.

This will be more difficult of course if you cannot get a splitty wheel arch to copy.

thanks hellbus,
so it would be no good if I find an early bay and cut the arches out to use?

robnjo - April 14th, 2004 at 07:58 PM

this is them....so it would be a no go on early bay ones?

57kombi - April 14th, 2004 at 10:22 PM

I am not too sure but I think early bay ones were very close to the later splitty ones.

robnjo - May 10th, 2004 at 08:35 AM

So has anybody got any they'd cut out of an old bus or early bay and sell to me?

Herbie - May 10th, 2004 at 08:57 AM

Rob, when I was in a similar position with my old 67 Panel, I went to see Alec Brown, and we sourced them, You can come over and have a look at my 64 Kombie if you like, as it would have the same rear guards you are seeking and this way you have a better Idea of what you are after.
Cheers Tony

Heh Rob.........just wondering if you've had any luck with the wheel arches as i need some too.:o

splittychick - June 28th, 2004 at 04:17 PM

Has anyone found any wheel arches in Oz that aren't on a donor bus????

Looks like i might have to order from Schofields!!

busnut - June 28th, 2004 at 10:34 PM

if you can get the vw made item i would definetly recomend it, I bought his rear arches once and never used them because they were really s**t . the profile was similar but not the same and the finish of the moulding was rough and would of required much bogging to smooth them out.
