how much to get a kombi painted?
Purple Martin - April 15th, 2004 at 12:27 PM

This morning my girlfriend asked me how much it would cost to get the kombi spraypainted - I don't think she likes the blotchy baby-poo colour it is now :(

So how much would it cost, roughly? It doesn't need to be anything special, just a basic respray.

3.5k if its the not a totally new colour

El cheapo having everything masked up not removed and no dents or rust you might get it as low as 1.5k
You will wish later that you had spent a bit extra and not have peeling paint at the edges of the rubbers.

3k will get you a basic respray without rust or major dents. This will also usually mean the car will look great from about 3 metres away, but if you look up close you will see minor bits.

You would have to spend 5-6k to start getting a real nice job.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks! When I said to her "I guess it would be about 2000" she didn't believe me at all. Now I can tell her it'll probably be even more, and she'll stop badgering me.

yup, sounds about what i have heard. have seen advertised near us spraying from $600, but that sounds pretty damn iffy to me. good jobs are around what helbus said.

Just the paint will cost a grand.... without any surface prep or dents filled...

just outta interest, if i was to do it myself (which i am planning to), what would the paint cost (just colour and clear coats, the rest is done)?

So what sort of money for a change of colour outside & in ?

Would it be worth skimping and not taking everything out ?i.e. windows, headliner, pop-up, engine

Mate it realy depends on what type of paint you use.

To do the insides adds considerably to the cost. Probably an extra grand for an average job, but because it is so fiddly it will cost heaps if you want it really good.

The most common items to be left in when doing an inside colour change are.
The headliner.
The Dash
The engine

Quite often these items are just too much work for the small extra they give.

On our beetle I painted in the engine bay and under the bonnet in satin black as that was easier than body colour.

in my experience, if i was to respray our bug again i would not go the cheapo option.

There is nothing sader then getting new window rubbers a year down the track to have a thin line around the new rubber in the old colour.

it may be a little extra but next time i respray i am pulling the bug apart guards and all.
