need some advice...

Hi,

Right now I am in the middle of a pan swap to a 68 IRS chassis which is being rebuilt. I was thinking that whilst the body is off I could get it resprayed.

I would get the body sandblasted/dipped and weld up a hole in the front fender well as well as fix up any other rust I can find. The body has a few dents in it, but overall its pretty solid. I could strip down the body completely myself (all windows, interior etc.)

What I wanted to know is how much should I budget for? I dont want a show quality job, just most of the big dents pulled out and a good paint job. How hard is it to learn how to do rust repairs decently?

It depends on how much work you do your self. Paint stripping the car would be a good start before you go to the sand blaster. At least it will cost you less at the blaster cause he will only have to touch the rust areas and this will be a better job.

Strip the car out completely as well wiring and all trim out is best and makes it easier for the blaster and panel shop.

As for panel beaters first of all you need to find a place that is actually willing to do the job THIS WILL BE HARD. especially if you want it done in a time frame.

Try a few of the shops around your area. This will be easier for you to pester them and push them along by waving money under there noses. If they have cars in there with 3 inches of dust on them then stay clear.

forgot to say that the last time i checked with the blaster its was $150.00 per hour. So consider that when you have the sections blasted.

Paint strip first will get it down to the bare facts so you can see what needs blasting.

Hmmm i'm starting to think that i could put this money into a 1916 instead :) I'll probably have about $4-5k or so to spend...

gotta decide soon :) The body is pretty solid as it is, no rust in the heater channels, only a hole in the fender welll which i could weld up. Hmmm maybe i could just leave it as it is and do a rat look :)

a big engine may be nice but it will only Get you in trouble with the law but a nice clean ride is so sweet to drive SHOW PONYS RULE :cool:
