Lbug dash removal

i was wondering if any of you out there in vw land has removed the padded dash on a 73 1303 or later bug. even if it was to replace it. cause i know that you can get replacement pads but how are they fixxed on to the dash. pleeasse anyone help me

That's a pretty good guide. I'd attempted it a while back on my '74 without much luck. I didn't realise that it was actually bolted to the metal dashboard and the grills went right through to the metal too. I just tried it again and got it off in about an hour including cleaning up some of the mess underneath.

The car looks a lot nicer without it, except that there are quite a few holes which had been obscured by the padded dash. Looks like they're the light switches for both left and right hand drive versions.

On a similar note, does anyone know how, or know of an article on how to remove the dash on a curved sceen bug?

I am getting a water leak from somewhere behind the dash (when it rains) and don't want to spend days trying to take it off if there a simple way of doing it!

you mean like an L bug? i think that you should read this thread again and realise that a 1303 is a L bug 73 or later or a curved screen bug, cause the 1302 is the sbug or a flat screen. im sorry i dont mean to sound sarcastic but the question you asked is the same as what i asked and it was answered by andrewh.

hey are sure the leak is coming form the windscreen? I have had the same leak on the 2 L bugs, both leak water onto the fuse box and similar. try looking in the boot under the pod that houses the wipers, tkae th blake pannel of and have a look at the back corners, noramlly find rosy holes here, or betweent eh base of the pod and the fuel tnak of the fire wall.

i had a leak on the sbug at the washer jets, i fried 2 head units before realising

I read that article in the link and it seemed to me like it was for a flat screen super (1302) with a padded metal dash, not the full platic type thing in a 1303... maybe I misread it...

Edit: Ok yeah call me an idiot if you like, just re-read that article... it's just that he first said post 68 at the top and he owns a 70... nothing to do with an L bug at all...

BiX - I'll check that out, it does drip down right next to the fuse panel. :)

sorry mate but i wasnt talking about the article but one of the posts. i could be wrong about it thought. a 1302 has a metal dash for the record, its the 72/3 1500 that has the padded metal dash with the flat screen. good luck with the leak mate

I knew that a 1302 had a metal dash, as I owned one for a short time. But i'm no expert on most any other type of bug. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread and I'll leave it alone now;)

no mate go for it it been at this state for a week and no one has any info cause no one seems to have done any thing like this mainly cause it illegal on the original 73s and later but not the 72 i have.
