hey guys im just curious to know how much paint is need to respray a bay kombi, im wanting to get it sprayed in silver all over so the whole outside of the bus and inside the windows just not in the inside if you know what i mean.
1:how much colour? in ltrs
2:how much primer/fillers? in ltrs
3:how much thinnners? in ltrs
4:how much clear coat? in ltrs

In acrylic you would need about 8 litres of primer filler, 20 litres of regular thinner for primer and cleaning up.

Also 8 litres of colour, 8 litres of clear, 20 litres of AAA high gloss thinner for the paint.

In a cheap brand the acrylic option would cost about $400-$500

in a good quality brand like PPG, Dulux etc probably closer to $800

If it is getting done in a booth in two pack, about 8 litres of primer filler, 2 litres of hardener, 1 litre of 2K thinner, 4-8 litres of gunwash thinner

Also 4-6 litres of colour depending on the coverage rate, 4-6 litres of 2K clear, 2 litres of hardener, 4 litres basecoat thinner, 1 litre 2K thinner.

Cost of paint alone for 2 pak in cheap brand maybe $600-$800

PPG, Dulux, Standox, Glasurit, Spies Hecker or other good brands expect to pay up to $1400 for the paint alone.

the above paint quantities, are they for a finish like your bus or something different? what paints did u use for your bus?

i went to a paint shop called milsomes auto paints in bayswater and asked the dood there, what ill need for a good quality paint job in acrylic, and this is what he said,
"youll need "
1:5ltrs of acrylic colour
2:4ltrs of acrylic clear
3:4ltrs of primer/fillers
4:20ltrs of gp thinners
any way this is what he suggested, is this correct or not??
he quoted me roughly $500 for all of this, is this good or bad deal? will this quantity do the job or will it fall short of a above average paint job??

Going by the size of a kombi, you will find it better to go above the standard 4,4,4,20 litre combo most paintjobs need to paint them. The dood has upped the colour, and you may just get away with it.

It is cheaper to buy in 4 litre quantities, so 2x4 litre isn't much more than 1x4 litre plus 2x1 litre to make up 6 litres. If you are painting insides of panels as well, you will find you will quickly use up two litres of colour and two of clear just doing that.

Also allowing for bumpers and the unfortunate possibility of mistakes. Even having a spare litre of the colour is a good idea in case of any small dings in the future should they ever happen.

You can use a lot more. I used 12 litres of colour and 8 litres of clear on my EH show car. Admitedly most of that gets rubbed back between coats, but that was what I had to do to get it to a glass finish.

Unfortunately there are no shortcuts or quick or easy ways. More effort = better finish. That's why my EH took me and my brother 3 weeks just to paint, and that was full time on my holidays. Probaby 400 hours work.

The bus, that is different. That was only 16hrs work to paint as it is done in 2 pak. But you can see up close it is just a common 2 pak paint job. It is quicker, but the paint is a lot more expensive and you have to have full flow breathing air and use of a spray booth.
