My 50/50 tail lights are faded- anyone know any people who restore such things or a good method to DIY- have read about the nail polish- but am unsure of the finish.

Any info appreciated... oh and what would these be worth, I dont want to waste money if they are easily obtained.

acetone is a way to recolour these

u just dip them in a solution but am not sure what to use in it
its a thinner so i guess and amber nail polish would do it thinned down

last did it in 67 to a 66 beetle to get the fr indicators up to mod clr.
ask yer local chemist for the acetone and the tint idea.

very cheap and 2 mins each so dont buy newbys but do a test on other lenses

you cant buy new ones as they are half half 60-61 taillights

So you dip it in, so both sides are coated- rather than painting the inside ????

wouldnt acetone melt them??

Thanks for the advice BJ- you doing okay for a redneck..typing now and all..

I do know that Rares does have a taillight lense die. Comes in a spray pak, not sure of manufacturer, but it does a good job if masked nicely and will make the stop/tail almost blood red. look nice at night.

The solvent of nail polish is acetone, which should be available in a hardware store. I would be very careful about dipping old plastic in acetone is could easily dissolve it. I ruined the handle of my genuine Swiss Army knife with acetone.

I would still consider using nail polish as it dries very quickly and I doubt if it would be able to do any damage in such a short time.

All I can say is be careful and test what you want to do first.

Solvents such as acetone (in nail polish) can make clear plastic opaque. I wouldn't do it, I would look at the lens dye that firefly was talking about.

Autobarn sell amber and red lense tint. Just brush it on with brush supplied. Too easy.

I recently saw a program on the how to channel, where a guy is restoring a 1930's Yank car, he had a kit that you can remake any lens with.

Basically a plaster type mold and your pour plastic resin itno and it copies your old lens exactly and you mix the resin with the dye.

You could make endless copies of the 50/50 lights with it

This is probably the best thread to ask without starting a new thread for one question probably already asked but can't be found.

Q. What are the legalities on dark tinted and euro lenses? Do the authorities frown on these? Anybody know?
