Removing old sound deadner/body schutz
oldnslo - August 12th, 2006 at 06:41 PM

I am stripping the floorpan of my 56 bug (still) and underneath someone has sprayed on this rubber type sound deadner or body shutz which is 3mm thick in some places.
Anybody know how to remove this stuff?I am using polly stripper and turps but it only softens the top and turns it into a gooy mess, and it has to be removed before sandblasting.
Any ideas would be great, cheers

Hi Oldnslo,
I had that problem too, while restoring my 74 bug the only way i found to really remove it was using a heat gun and a paint scraper. Then an angle grinder fitted with a really strong wire brush it took for ever but worked .
Good luck

Thanks Tangblog,
Probably the only way to go short of acid dipping,

Try Petrol if will soften it but you will have to scrap n scrub theres no easy way

Most sound deadeners are Petroleum based so the petrol will make it easier

Dont 4 get its a $1.50 a liter so use it wise

yeah i noticed turps softened it up, almost cheaper than petrol, definetly a shitty job to do,
You should see the garage floor...
