ok i just bought another early beetle and the paint is really old faded and chalky ,fantastic really just the way it should look for a cool rat look, however the bonnet has an issue that needs work and is there a method of repainting that can give me the same weather beaten faded look :beer:beer:beer
Well weather is the best way to achieve a weather beaten faded look.
The alternative is to have it painted in acrylic and ask them to add heaps of flattening base. The paint will look flat to begin with and will get
chalky quicker than full gloss paint
Been reading some of the mags from the Uk , Some of the guys trying to attain rat look have been using products such as Pepsi, Brake fluid and Talcom powder on their top coats !!!!! Crazy if u r in the uk and want that look just park yo car outside for a week!!!
I think you can 'age' it with some 1500 wet n dry too...paying more attention to where the panel would wear more...

yeh add talcum powder to the paint for a faded chalky look
I've been painting cars for 12 years,.. one way you can go if you want a super "chalky" look,..clear coat and flatner,...like almost 50/50 clear
and flatner,....lightly dust it on over your base coat, it will flatten out to the extreme,.. I found that out my accident once
practice on various things you have laying around first in a small amount so you dont waist all your materials,...if 50/50 doesnt look the way ya want
it, try 75/25 (75 flatner,25 clear) and play with that
or actually whats cheaper than clear coat is clear "mixing binder" its basically a clear paint, it isnt formulated like clear coat for durablity
,but is still clear and a cheaper way to go then the actual cost of clear coat
I hope this helps
Cheers

imagine 15 years ago if someone had suggested they wanted to intentionally make their car look like that....
they woulda been laughed outta town
