may sound very silly to some people out there
but i can't really afford to buy whitewall tires at the moment and am curious as how one would go about making their own? saw a few at the nationals and am guessing it's either painting the tires or the thing where people sand back the black rubber on a black tire?

I bought a brand new set of Atlasinserts at the nationals for $110. from Volksmakin he has a ebay store and website http://www.volksmakin.com.  And the guy that does the 'grinding' is redvan and he comes to you http://www.redvan.com.au  and I think it's about $160 to have them do 4 tyres. I'd go with the atlas...

You've got three options here. The first has been mentioned - whitewall flappers. The second option is to have whitewalls cut into your tyre and painted - I think up to $100 all up, but I've never had it done personally, so can't comment on confirmed cost. The third option is to put your hand into your pocket and buy proper whitewalls. I've just bought some Sumitomo's WSW for my non-VW ride (14 inch only) at $98 a corner, or you can go bigger dollar such as what is on http://www.antiquetyres.com.au/  and go from there. Each option will give you a cost increment - it just depends on your budget. Personally, I've gone flappers in the past for a good start up option.

dfinately keen on those flappers as i couold surely use them on new tires?
i have stock rims on a 70' bug and am guessing the are 15inch?

the sanding method looks ok but i want to see it in person to see how legit.

anyone have bad experiences with the flappers? discolouration? [sp?]

yeah i used to know someone who would paint whitewalls but havent seen him for years.

I would have thought there was four options. Why could you not just paint them on yrself? It may not last as long but surelly with acrylic paint it would work?

well Du88en in reply to yr initial question I personally cannot see if you rough rubber with a bit of sandpaper and apply acylic white paint that it wont do the job. To make yr circle outline I would hold a piece of string at centre with a pencil at other end.

Ended up turning out alright!
On ebay, there actually is 'white wall' paint.

only concern is either a steady hand, no brush strokes left behind or decent masking.
