I am at the stage where I am collecting parts for the front end and getting ready to go back on the road. My first thoughts were that I could repair
the rust in the pictures below. However I have found that to purchase a gas mig welder will blow the budget sky high and the gasless one I thought I
could use may leave contaminants in the weld and rust from the inside out.
I could take the car to a crash repairer but that would mean waiting until I can get the front end parts and then put them all back together, I don't
really want to have all my new parts on while welding and I have to get the car back together sooner than I thought.
I have thought of removing the spot-welds, making up new box panels and cutting some metal to the right size for the inner section. I know the early
cars did not have these box sections but by the look of them they serve to strengthen that area (assumption based on the fact that the "box" is so
big and the number of spotwelds)
If I am wrong I can glue the pieces in, which would be good as then I can clean and paint everything. Anyone have any feedback or better yet panels
they could remove from a donor car?
Bugger of a design really as the box sections were completely full of dirt and road grime, I was pulling out handfuls of the stuff
After the repairs are done I was going to use POR15 but most of the panel will not have rust. Is there one product I can coat the bare metal (and old
paint) with and get a finished look as well as rust protection? I don't have a compressor yet as the one I was going to buy from Autobarn wouldn't
spray the chassis black as it was too thick. It would be ideal to be able to brush something on or get something thin enough to spray with the cheap
compressors
Any pointers, tips and advice greatly appreciated
I will not be repairing or spraying areas of the car that people see. That will be left to someone competent lol

I removed those box sections on my Type 3 when i did it no harm done
Thanks, I was hoping someone had done this before. I will be quite happy to remove those bloody rust traps
