Painting cost guide
DJR1971 - December 14th, 2009 at 04:22 PM

Hi all,

I'm new here and this is my first post, so be nice :-)

I've joined as I'm hoping to purchase a Karmann Ghia to play with, although may go for a Beetle first as it's been a long time since I worked on a car (hobby experience only).

Anyway, to the paint question...as I look at costs, etc, can anyone give me a ballpark figure for respraying a KG, assuming I do all/most of the prep work myself?

I will look into doing it myself, but in case I decide to go metallic or chicken out, wanted a sense of what I should budget for a complete respray.

Thanks,
Darren

how long is a piece of string. how good a job you want, what type of paint, etc. the panel shop i used to work at it was a min of $3-4g for a shut door respray. but that was a little while ago.

$10,000 to $50,000 depending on the quality of finish required and the quality of your prep work.

Hi,

I forgot to add "it's a 'how long is a piece of string' question" to my original post...I figured as much.

Thanks for the replies though - gives me a sense of what's required...if it's just exterior or whole shell I guess. Depends what I buy!

Helbus, someohow I can't see me spending $50K on painting a $10K car :-) As much as I'd like to! We'll see, I may end up doing it myself - I build wooden boats/kayaks now so my prep work for doing clear varnish and painting is pretty good, and I've painted a Land Rover SIIa before which came out fine.

If I know I'm up for at least a few grand then I can factor that in (and not buy a pink Beetle at least!).

Thanks,
Darren

10,000 to 50,000 to spray on already pre-prepped car?

So how does a guy get a 3,000 beetle resprayed then?

You can do better than that. I have heard a lot about quality, u get what u pay for etc, fact is that there is a sucker born every day.

what they are talking about is what it really cost from start to finish with a decent painter doing all the work.
i know helbus knows what he is talking about as he is in the trade.
personally when i was getting quotes for my bug i got everything from a case of beer to 15000 and thats with me doing the prep work.
