In 2001 I had my bug restored. This involved stripping everything out (engine, wheels, interior etc), replacing all door/window rubbers, taking it
back to bare metal, removing unwanted chrome, filling holes and repairing rust for around $6000 but I forget the exact price. See pic:
Since then, the years have taken their toll on the paint and it's time to start getting quotes for a respray. I will be getting a quote from the
people who did the work before but I'd also like to know of any recommended panel beaters. Even better would be if you had some example pics of work
they've done (maybe to your ride?)
Hi Oppressa,
I would highly recommend Detroit Custom Body Works in Arncliffe, they normally do muscle cars but they know their way around VW's. They did a similar
'tidy up' on my Karmann last year and it came back looking factory fresh. The price was also a bargain compared to some of the over inflated VW
specialists - one guy quoted $10K and only wanted to tape around the screens.
Here is their website and a couple of pics of my KG...

Hi
2001 wasn't that long ago, it should have held up better, but maybe it got used a lot and was out in the weather.
My old 1302 was restored in 1998 by a very respected guy, Kurt Martensin who finally got a normal job and is no longer doing that sort of work, he
also did Dave Birchalls orange and blue cars, they both still look stunning.
I sold my 1302 in 2004, the new owner drives it to work every day and the car still looks great.
When my sons bug was vandalised in late 2008 we took it to a guy in Peakhurst called Cooltop conversions (9533 3476), he used to do lots chop top
convertibles, they know their way a around VWs.
I'm going to get him do the paint on my new bug that I'm building.

Agreed, thats not a long time for paint life, what was it done in, type of paint that is. Is it parked outside in direct sun all day every day?
Hi
I forgot to say my yellow bug was done in acrylic lemon yellow tinter, which is not meant to be long lasting, but it has.
