I might be attempting a rat look job and the owner says that she is ok with having sections welded onto parts of the panels that have rust, as opposed
to replacing the complete panel.
I have two concerns, 1) i only have a mig welder and know that this will produce a obvious and messy looking weld (due to lack of expertise with the
welder, usually bog and paint welds).
2) would it pass roadworthy inspection for registration if it has obvious welds in sections of panels?
Has anyone ever done up a rat look kombi this way, or do the complete panels have to be replaced where there are rusted out sections.
cheers,
j
I have seen quite a few with joins on the lower 6 inches visable. So I guess they get through road worthy if done right.
Its all in the preperation.
Take your time getting the filler panels to line up nicely with an even gap. Tac on tac welds should turnout quite nice if the metal lines up nicely,
and you should be able to knock it back with a flap disc and have a reasonably good finish.
