How to prevent cracks in gelcoat coming to top coat?
bajachris88 - April 3rd, 2012 at 04:07 PM

I have a crack-er of a problem  (poor jokes aside...)

My fibreglass bonnet and guards are quite old yet strong and sturdy. I have sanded back the many layers of paint down to the gel coat, which in some places is covered in hundreds of little cracks.

Is there a spray on membrane to keep the gel coat cracks coming up to the surface of a new topcoat?

any suggestions or solutions?
Whats the professional approach?

thanks in advance.

Chris,

Certainly not claiming to be professional, but with those spider cracks I have seen a lot of information on opening the cracks up with a stanley knife or dremmel for the putty to bind to and then fill and prime or another gel coat - jump on youtube there are a quite a few links on there on the topic. I have some cracks in my Manx and I was looking at best ways to repair them.

Good luck

Peter

Thanks Peter! i checked out those vids and they were panel beaters so it must be the optimal way. i been getting stuck in, just about to put up some progress pics.

The amount of cracks in the gel coat was rediculous!
