just wondering if any off you out there use Sikkins (ppg deltron at the mo but there waters not cost affective for a shop our size by there own admission) water based paint over solvent... we're looking to change and the last time i used waterbourne was when it first started to come out many years ago in the uk and i hated it... i know its come on a long long way but i would like some input from someone who uses it...

its big change for us and it will involve putting a new booth in..

so... anyone got anything to offer?

I will be corrected if wrong I'm sure but the only water based part of the system is the basecoat clear is still a solvent based, clear isn't quite upto aus conditions yet (this is what I'm lead to believe) in the glasurit system anyway so not sure of PPG's system.

yea its only the base, there are clears on the market and they have been tested here and seem to be holding up but they are very very slow and not pratical for everyday use.

the clears/dg/primers etc do have a much lower solvent content then the solvent based paints.

Are you talking about high volume crash repair shop turning over 20, 30, 40, 50, 100? cars per week, or a restoration shop?

small smash shop with some resto work... 15/20 a week at most and maybe 4 or 5 full restos over the year...

I see Protec as a good one to look at.

They have resto stuff like epoxy, polyester etc

They have industrial paints

They have a good shiny and easy to match colour smash paint system.

Have a look at it.

We currently use the Epotec epoxy as a base part of our restoration work, and Protec as the colour range. We are finding it a good all round product that suits restoration and repair. they have an acrylic range as well, which does suit our work, as once in a while we have to do an acrylic lacquer repair.

Hey Dubcrazy I currently use glasurit 90 line which is there waterborune system and have a great tech advise and training. If you have new cars to paint colour match is so good as most newa cars are waterborune and silver don't have dark halo's but can be a bit sparkly. So good not to have the strong smell of solvent in basecoat. Take a bit longer when wanting to denib waterborne base coat. You will need a bigger compressor to run dryers in the booth and tools on the floor as the dryers use a good amount of air to dry paint. At melbourne 2 weeks ago glasurit had a info weekend and waterbourne is growing fast. And that solvent pigments are running out.
As for resto work the paint system stays the same accept for basecoat.
