I,m looking at replacing the speedo and some off the gauges to electronic ones namely Drift Performance Km/H .It would go into a 69 Beetle any ideas
has anyone done this before?
Cheers

Hi Frank
I don't know of the Drift one but a local has bought a speedo in KMH along with a tacho with shift points etc..
and He also got an aluminium piece that fits into the beetle speedo
hole so it all looks great..
its all done by a small antenna wire at the top of the windscreen [GPS]
I can find out if You like.. its a great looking and working speedo/tacho

Hi Kev
I thought that drilling etc those large holes in the beetle dash pieces was going to difficult, which it was, so I bought the two pieces with holes
from the USA.. lol
and You wouldn't believe they are nowhere the same shape as RHD...
I thought if I reversed the plates they would still fit.. but NO..lol
Yes I fitted the Bright blue LEDs a while back.. but find the tacho one isn't lighting it up good enough at night due to where the bulb fits..
I replaced the metal VDO tacho with a plastic one but still the same.
so I've been thinking of drilling an extra hole or two to get it brighter.
[drilling very carefully] lol
LEDs are slowing getting wider in their light projection...
I have fitted LED downlights at home replacing the 12v 50 watt ones.
but the limited light width is a problem.. at the moment..
the 50watt ones ate 45 degrees but I have seen some now wider than that.. the LED ones are about 45 degrees..
and the warm white ones are not very bright compared to the cold white [about 1/2 the brightness and not the bright white]
I actually fitted two small down lights with bright LED lights in them..
in My Wife's Suzuki swift a few years ago.. everyone knows her car by the lights.. I fitted 12 volt zener diodes in the power to stop any over
voltage [which LEDs do not like] as you know alternators can get up to 15 volts [so I've read] and My beetle shows 14 volts at times.
The early downlights are DC only and cannot work with the new electronic type of transformers, but the earlier ones can be used with a DC bridge
rectifier ...
Hope YOu are feeling OK..
cheers
LEE in Scone.. bit cold today.. lol
