Which distributor?
Artisam - November 6th, 2013 at 06:49 PM

Hi
I am trying to source a new distributor to hopfully address a particularly anoying flat spot., occurring primarily when the engine is cold in my 1972 1600 dual port super beetle.
My mechanical knowledge is rather limited but it seems the best option would be a vacuum-advance unit, perhapes a Bosch 0 231 170 034 or VW 043-905-205?
I have also come across an EMPI SVA Vacume- Distributor with Electronic Ignition 9437-B on eBay but have no idea if this is a reputable or even suitable distributor.
Also would this be a good opertunity to move to electronic ignition?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Sam

Ps have just scrolled down the page and realised there is a much more appropriate place for this post. If anybody knows how I can move it it would also be greatly appreciated.

Just copy and paste, but occasionaly a mod will move it for you.
I replaced my entire distributor with an electronic set up and havn't looked back, fixed all my flat spot problems, got mine from Classic, went to the shop, bought it and had someone else install it, over two years and have never had a problem.

Buy a good quality distributor, I have this one, no issues to date.

Absolute bargain at $506.00, you can get three of the pertronix distributors for that.

Thanks for all your replies, they have all been extremely useful. I think the petronix is going to be the best fit for the car and my wallet.
I'm sure this is another painfully obvious question but I have noticed these distributors are available in 6v and 12v, is 12 the most appropriate for a 72 superbug?

12 volt will suit your car.
