1: Type 1 beetle engine in a buggy weighs 99kgs.
2: Type 1 beetle engine in a buggy with twin webers weighs 103kgs.
3: Type 4 engine in a buggy with porsche upright kit and twin webers weighs 111kgs.
All the weights are done on calibrated scales by Mike sharp.
Seems like a small penalty to suffer for all that cheap extra torque-wat to go
Wow that is surprising!! I thought there was much more difference!!
Mind you I have only compared a fully assembled type 1 with a fully assembled type 4. All the extra bit's on the type 4 probably add up to a bit
more difference.

I only posted what mike sharp sent me and he is very clicked on about all that stuff

Well, there you go. 15Kg
2 long blocks on my crappy bath scales (don't tell the missus!!)
type 1 (1600TP) 70kg
type 4 (2L) 85kg
Interesting to note, type1 gen+fan 9kg
type4 alt. +fan 6kg
Overall length of CASE type1 ~360mm, type4 ~400mm

Oh,
I should mention type 1 in pic has oil.
Type 4 has no oil but heaps of crud on it

Can you also measure the sump depth from centre to see how much ground clearance you loose with a type 4
Again fairly rough measurements.
type 1 ~190mm
type 4 ~210mm
(center of crank to lowest part of case)
Both pretty much full depth end to end of case.

Andy,
we can get into a major long discussion about weights like is the flywheel lightened, crank size even rockers can all play a part in the overall
weight of the motor. I only put the weughts up as Mike Sharp asked me too.
Graham.
No long discussion coming from me. As I said these are only elcheapo bath scales, so probably good to the nearest 5kg. Only trying to help answer
Brads question as I happen to be in the middle of fixing both.
What I weighed were both completely stock motors in long block form, both have pressure plate and friction plate on flywheel as can be seen in
photo.
About the only other things worth mentioning is the 1600 is Brazilian factory motor (don't think this makes any difference??) and 2000 is not
clean so may be 1-2kg of dirt build up in and on it.
If anything it probably confirms Mikes info anyway.
Andy over and out :thumb
