hi there,
just wondering if anyone could direct me on how to install properly some early pop outs to an oval....what to look for....has anyone took some photos
of being in the process of doing so?
cheers
I have installed a pair into my 63 and another pair into my friends oval. Unfortunately didn't take too many pics.
Basically having two people is way easier but can be done alone (take care not to drop the glass - I almost did a few times when doing it alone).
First I took the hinge plate (threaded plate) out but left the hinge on the popout frame (with rubber still in place on the frame - not pinchweld).
Next I fitted the popout in place and slipped the hinge over the lip where the old window seal once fitted to on the rear side of the B-pillar (near
your outside shoulder if sitting in the car). Once in place take time to ensure it is centred and is sitting nicely - trial and error.
I then scribed where the five (or is it 6?) holes onto the lip through the holes in the hinge. Then take popout out and put it back in again and
recheck your holes line up again (you know the saying measure twice cut (drill) once). Once you're sure they are in the right spot drill out the
holes slightly oversize compared to the screws that are used.
Next put the popout back in with the hinge plate and screw it in place - it should now swing in and out and the rubber should be a tight fit around
the body for a seal. The hinges have give in them to allow you to (carefully) push/pull where necessary to get the window in or out further.
Next close the popout and place the latch at the rear onto the body in the closed position. Again this is trial and error but where you drill those
four holes will determine how far in the popout rear edge will tuck in. Too far in and you'll have a hard time getting the rubber to fold comfortably
and close without breaking the latch....too far out and the window will leak. Play around with it till it looks right then scribe and drill the holes
(again undersize for the screws) - screw the latch in place and hopes it functions properly!
Final step is not to blame me if it doesn't work - take this advice or leave it! It worked for me twice but take your time as it is a lot harder to
redrill holes once they are already made.

hi alan,
thanks for the tips......don't worry i won't blame you :thumb
cheers....
when i start it i will take some pics step by step and post em up for other people's reference ...
cheers
cool!
Does anyone know where I could get some latches for my set for my '63 - they came to me without the latches :duh This is the only thing stopping
me from fitting them.

oh dear, they are hard to find. Keep an eye out on thesamba.com in the parts up to '67 section. Also ebay - the latches only for early ones don't
come up too often.
I enquired at Kochs in the US - I think they do repro ones for the earlies but aren't cheap from memory (US$80 each I think but don't quote me as it
was long ago). I made enquiries because I was going to buy a pair of latchless popouts but ended up passing them in because couldn't find a pair
after much looking. Hope you have better luck. :cry
Kochs would be the best place to get them. Have a look for there phone number in hot VWs magazine.
Cheers! I'll have a go and let you know what happens

I THINK VVDS MIGHT HAVE SOME....I THINK...
VVDS? :duh
The late model popout latches (that insert through a hole in the glass) are much more common - make sure you get the ones that attach to the popout frame via two screws.
Yes pretty sure VVDS has Repro latches in stock give them a call 02-9789-1777
